I did a locum for a practice who were waiting for a nurse to start work who also had to give 3 months notice. She was honest from the start and told them at interview but they liked her above the other candidates and were obviously willing to wait so im sure other practices would too

Has the contract just been given to you? When i got my contract it had 2 month notice period, i said i wasn't happy with this so was changed to 1 month. So if it's a contract you've just been given and haven't signed yet, then ask to change it.

2 months does seem to be the norm now with some positions (e.g.Head Nurse) being longer due to being harder to fill.

I was told once that if you are paid monthly then this is the legal length of time that can be enforced as a notice period - the BVNA may be able to help you on the legalities as my info may be out of date. It may be in your contract but that is not always as binding as you may realise - but again do check this. If you don't have access to the BVNA legal helpline then you could try citizens advice.

Personally if someone has made a decision to leave and their position has been suitably filled I think it makes sense to negotiate an earlier leaving time - an unhappy team member is not a productive one or good for the rest of the team.

Mine was 2 months for my old job and I tried to cut it down when I wanted to leave but they wouldn't let me. Managed to take 7 days off due to unused holiday and my new job were willing to wait for me.

this is another reason to read your contract prior to signing it!!

if you really want to leave then i would sit down and discuss with your boss and see if they would be willing to reduce the length of time

I had to give 2 months in my last job before starting my current job. Took 5 months in total as had to have CRB check and medical prior to arranging a start date!

So if they have offered you a job am sure thye will be willing to wait for you.

do you have holiday that you could take at the end of your notice?? might be able to leave a bit earlier???
