About 6 month ago I took on an unwanted puppy from work, he was only about 12 weeks when I got him, just a random cross breed (suggestions

Re: Terror puppy.... help!

yey! I have also started to shut the cat out of the living room at night and that seems to have had the most success! Thnik she was winding him up early morning when she wants to be fed!

Thanks for all the great advice from everyone, He is a great dog and I'm sure he will get better over time, just needs a bit of patience from typically impatient old me! hehe

Re: Terror puppy.... help!

[quote user="Olivia Shelley"]

Right, now have a DAP plug in, DAP collar, zylkene capsules and ignoring him in the morning lol.

Funkyfish, think he is getting bored, will try a kong with marmite, sounds like a good plan as he is definately too sleepy in the evenings to care and think it is boredom, although he does have a ragger and a bacon nylabone in his kennel which he loves.

lololol!! He should be so chilled out that he keels over hahaha!!!

On a more serious note though - I do hope you find the answer to his success, through time, maybe all he will need will be the dap collar. Good luck

Re: Terror puppy.... help!

Good luck

Re: Terror puppy.... help!

Right, now have a DAP plug in, DAP collar, zylkene capsules and ignoring him in the morning lol.

I used to put a puzzle feeder/kong with marmite in, in with mine at bed time when he was too sleepy to bother with it, but in the morning he would play with it. When this stopped working I resorted to a water pistol after all other possibilities excluded as eventually he was just demanding attention, only had to use it twice!

Re: Terror puppy.... help!

Thanks everyone so much for the advice, will def try and pick up a DAP plug in tomorrow and see if that makes any difference and keep you all updated.

He doesn't sleep in my bedroom, I've tried my best to do everything by the book, so he sleeps in a crate in the living room downstairs. Feel really bad about all of this as he really is a fantastic do generally, its just this thats driving me bonkers! Lol

Thanks guys, feeling a lot more positive and proactive now xx

Re: Terror puppy.... help!

Hi Olivia - I know all about sleepless nights - although my problem was slightly different as my puppy was only 9weeks old and just doing the usual new home thing. It might be worth you looking at my desperate post 'Screaming Nighttime puppy!' as I got some really good advice.

However - I know you said you have tried a DAP collar and did not notice much difference but I would really recommend a DAP plug in - it seemed to calm and comfort my puppy a great deal. Also, I have used zylkene on one of my stressy cats at various times and, again, it has made a real difference.

Apart from that, as others have said, I would make sure you are feeding him early enough for him to toilet before bed, try not to get up to him as it may encourage the behaviour - maybe explain the problem to your neighours so they know what is going on - I found mine to be very understanding. Make sure the room he sleeps in is very dark. Also - does he sleep in your bedroom? If not a radio or tele on quietly in the backround was a comfort to my puppy in the early days.

Best of luck - in a few weeks you will look back at this and wonder what you were so worried about - I did! x

Re: Terror puppy.... help!

could there be something waking him up?? a neighbour going to work etc?? try and make the room where he sleeps nice and dark so security light won't wake him. also has his feeding regime changed? if he is toileting in the middle of the night it may help to bring his feeding time earlier in the day so he feels the need to 'go' before bed?

also try dap- i have used theplug-ins and collars with huge success in my own animals and clients dogs, and as donna said, zylkene can be very useful.

with regards to dap- a collar may be more beneficial as he can have that on anywhere and might help with the seperation problem.

Re: Terror puppy.... help!

Thank you both

I did put a DAP collar on him when first got him, didn't notice a massive difference, but then he's quite a happy puppy anyway.

As to the not pandering to him, I'm trying my best, I really am! But its so difficult because of the neighbours! They haven't said anything but I know the barking travels through the walls because I have heard their yorkie barking. I know that getting up for him is totally the wrong thing to do... but also don't want to start world war 3 with the neighbours so it seems a bit easier to just get up to shut him up.

Re: Terror puppy.... help!

Could be his little body clock has not caught up yet... ie it is spring now and the birds are up before it is light, and the lighter mornings wont help.He may just think it is his normal time to get up because of this.

As to what you should do.... personally I would not be pandering to him, I would be staying put in bed until it was time to get up. I may get shot down by the behaviourists on here, but that is def what I would be doing, otherwise you are going to be dancing to his tune forever on more than this issue.

at the moment it must feel like a huge problem but im sure someone on here can advise you on what to do.

when i rehomed my dog last september i was concerned about anixety problems and her her on zylkene for a few weeks. I love the drug and feel it really helped cocoa settle in.

you could try that? it has good and bad reviews but personally i would reccommend it.

I recently advised a client at work to try it on her lab with the same problems and she was amzed with the results!

Im sure someone on her can advise you on the behavioural aspects aswell.

Good luck and keep us updated.

ps. you are definately not a tit or a failure!
