Do you need A levels (or equivelant) or can you be accepted if you have relevant experience working with animals as a vets assistant?

For instance I had 6 O levels, 2 A levels, HND in Animal Management - my local college where I took the HND were happy to accept me on the course, but as I was training 160 miles from home I had to also use the local college to the practice as a VNAC. They would not accept my qualifications and insisted I did the Key Skills Numeracy course and/or test - so I walked straight into an exam without doing the course or pre-exam test and got 97.5%.....waste of time but they wanted that piece of paperwork.

With changes to the NVQ route going ahead, it may also change the pre-requisites so check regularly when any changes are announced.

In the meantime I'm still looking for a place to continue my training, and will have to start again on whichever first year course is confirmed if I can ever get a place, be it TP or non-TP - but adverts are even fewer this year, when it was meant to make things easier.

Re: entry requirements and courses.

[quote user="Polly Player SVN"]

They must have had other qualifications in maths/English, it is no longer accepted on its own. The RCVS issued a cut off date, those that had the ANA certificate only could apply to join the VN programme up to this date. After this date, maths and English GCSE C or above (or equivalent) became essential. Can't remember how long ago, but we are talking more than 2 years ago.

Re: entry requirements and courses.

I am doin ANA and maths and communications int 2, you need these to get on to level 2 x

Re: entry requirements and courses.

Does anyone know how long ago that actually changed?
Yes that's true as mentioned, however you now still need to have either your maths and English GCSE or undertake key skills in these areas.
VN training is changing for September 2010, so it will be a little bit different in its structure. You will attend college on a day release basis (or block release) for 2 years, as well as working in a training practice or auxillary traininf practice. You will take theory and practical exams and have to complete a nurses progress log before you can then gain your Diploma in Vet Nursing.

There are others on here MUCH more clued up than I am, but those links should give you a good starting place

Re: entry requirements and courses.

Hi
