we are 24 hrs and have been for about 5 years and our shift patterns work quite well for us.

Early shift 8am-3.30pm
Late nurse 11.30am-7pm
1st night shift 6.30pm - 1am
2nd night shift 1am-8.30am

weekend 8am-7pm for one nurse then night shift as previous.

this works well for us the night nurses do thier shifts to suit them so might do both the 1st and 2nd shift at once for half the week.

That kennel shift sounds horrible! We usually have an average of 6-10 inpatients... having the same person there 12 hours each will drive the nurses slowly crazy!... actually it might make some very quickly crazy! lol

We have the kennel day shift thats from 7.45am to 8pm, who then hands over to the night nurse who works the same hours (only overnight lol). the time between 7.45 and 8 is used to complete the handover. We also have two nurses working 8-4, one in theatre, one in dispensary and two working 12-8 working the same areas. We also have a 10-6 shift who covers theatre. we have 2 other nurses who work mon-fri 9-5.

Weekends we have one nurse working the twelve hour shist and another works 9-2 (or a little later if we have an emergency in and is needed) and the same on the sun, but if its really quiet on the sun the 9-2 nurse can go home early as long as everything is done.

we have 1 nurse starting at 8.30 doing admits and helps with clinics rest of the day till 4.30

day shifts work from 9-5 (theatre and kennel shift)
then there is 1 person 11-7
and 3 people doing 1-9pm and 1 person 1.30-9.30
Kennel shifts are weekend shifts, cat shift sat+sun 9-5, dog shift sat+sun 9-9
Night shift nurse starts at 9pm and works till 8am who hands over to supervisor then, night shift hospital assistant starts at 9.30pm and stays till 8.30 so receptionist takes over phones.
