10mins slots for each patient.

We used to have interns (qualified vets wanting to gain experience) and they pre-op checked every patient. prior to premedication

Some of our soft-tissue, medical or cardio cases weren't premedicated until the vet in charge of the case was in the practice!

All pre-meds were worked out by VNs and checked by intern or anaesthetist prior to addministration

All of ours will have had a pre op appt with vet in the few days prior to surgery. So we will pre-med it without vet seeing it. If the vet specifically wants anything different from the norm for pre-med they will let us know. And if it's old/ill we will check with vet before pre-med. If owner wants PAB we'll take blood then wave results under vets nose before pre-med.

Re: admit appointments

If you've got a dedicated VN consulting room to do them in, I guess it's much easier

At my first practice we did, and admitted from 8-10am, just one nurse, so there'd sometimes be a long queue unless there was someone free to help, as a good day would see about 20-25 ops.

At my second practice, we were much smaller, a busy day was 4 ops & admitting was done across the reception counter (which I initially found quite weird!) and the animals were kenneled straightaway to await health checks from the vet before any premeds were given (even if they'd been seen before recently, which I also used to find quite frustrating..!)

I find it helps a lot when there is another nurse/hospital assistant to take animals to bed as soon as admit is done so I can crack on with next one instead of faffing about with pre-med, putting to bed etc.
and by the time she/he is finished I've finished with my next admit so she/he can take that one through again and so on.

Re: admit appointments

We admit between 8.30- 9am and consults are 9am- 11.30am but can run until 12 if it's busy- appointments are booked in for 15 minute slots.

Causes problems as we only have one consulting room, so ops are often being admitted in the prep room too, which means we can't get started with any bloods, premeds etc!

Occasionally the receptionists (VERY occasionally) or vets will admit which is pain in the bum, as they inevitably don't cover all the bases!

Re: admit appointments

Sometime if I'm overrun the receptionist will go through the client's details to make sure they're all ok and animal's details. Similar caseload. Earliest vets appt unless extreme emergency wasnt until 8.45. Everything had cannulas placed before 9 and pre op bloods were all drawn and run in most cases before 9.15 (after admits 1 nurse concentrated on bloods only until they were done and other nurse and vet took care of premeds and drawing anaesthetics whilst the other vet consulted) it was a good system everybody knew what they were doing and how much time they had to get it done. We didnt really have too many in patients tho and I suppose that made things easier

I do tend to agree that admits can be a lot easier and have more meaningful information(ie phone contact numbers in case of emergency and date of last season if spaying) on the consent form sometimes if the vet isnt involved. I am lucky I work in a small practice now with a decent vet and that doesnt seem to be a problem

Re: admit appointments

[quote user="Chippet"]

We average about 10 ops a day and only have 2 nurses in first thing to do admits, sort inpatients and start ops, so it gets a little hetic. We do have a designated room for doing our admits, that is if a vet hasn't already stolen it.

I know the vet only takes them in, to make our job 'easier' but they don't understand it actually makes it harder, since they don't go through all the information we do, so the day doesn't run as smoothly.

We don't have any other rooms free as both vets usually consulting so we have to make do with what we've got. ALL admits remain on the comp but are filed under the ops list so they are seperate from the consult diary to avoid confusion.

Re: admit appointments

We admit 8-8.30, there is between 1-3 nurses on duty to do it. Vets start consults at 9 so gives us time to use their rooms.

Re: admit appointments

i admit between 8- 8.30 usually 4-5 ops as a branch surgery. we officially open at 8.30 so this makes it much easier for me and usually the vet is just arriving about 8.15ish.
