I appriciate your comments but I didn't come on here and ask for advice to be judged. I understand it is a situation when not everyone will agree. The Vet who examined the pig was of the opinion that it not unfair to give it a chance. The farmer who owned the pig was also happy for her to try, he said the only reason he didnt try and medicate it was because of finacial reasons. Yes of course it will expeirence some suffering, as will any human or animal who has an illness, but there is still a chance it will survive. No, the pig will not be dumped. If you read the above posts my friend has already found somewhere for it to go when it is better.

I'd rather not have any more of your advice if it is going to turn nasty.
i agree... this forum is for advice, not to backlash against people, i also agree that we all have different opinions, but bizzy asked for advice that was all.

It is a lovely little piglet as i saw it today at work when it was brought in...doesnt seem to be suffering or distressed, is very happy when trotting around.

Good luck to it... no harm in trying is there.

Re: Pigs!

Personally, I'm all for giving it a chance, but then I like a challenge. And if hes got a home to go to great!! If he get worse and has to be PTS so be it, but there is no harm in trying. Good luck to you and snuffle snuffle to piglet.

Re: Pigs!

Re: Pigs!

I don't know anything about pigs but if in the same situation I would have the piglet pts. I have taken a lot out of it and felt that to many times people are taking on things that are best allowed to be pts. Sometimes it takes blunt to get them to see it. THAT was my point.

I find it interesting that people in this case yourself complain but make sure that it is in quotes so in effect double posted... as opposed to just making the comment at the end.

Re: Pigs!
Just had a message back from pig farmer friend l sent him your problem. You may not like his comments but they are based on years of experience and l am afraid l agree with him on what you need to do with the piglet, what the farmer was going to do.

.........................................................................................

Caro,

Three-week-old piglet with pneumonia, stentorian breathing and laboured abdominal effort? Shoot it. It might recover if medicated and fed properly (not cow's milk) but even if it does it will be runty.

As for it not taking solids, it's a suckling piglet. Yes, commercial farms wean around 25 days (21 is the earliest under EU law) but you need specialist feeds and need to know what you're doing. A piglet will normally start on solids around 4-5 weeks but will stay suckling up until 12-14 weeks unless taken away by us humans.

In our sick piglet situation l told you about I shot one of the sick ones as soon as it moved from being uncomfortable to suffering. Yes, the vet did come out three hours later (autopsies) but three hours of unrelieved suffering is not on in my book and a quick painless death is best.

It would be the same with the piglet you mentioned. It will be suffering, it will not thrive until it is fully recovered (if that happens) and so will lag behind other piglets of a similar age, and what will the VN do with it once it has recovered? Dump it over the fence at a pig farm? (Has happened to us and a big commercial unit up here.) Try to house train it and keen it in the sitting room? (Hmm, 250kg beast shitting on the carpet... )

Okay, rant over. I suggest you shoot the vn and then the pig.
was there really ANY need for some of that!
