I wear a hat i surgery bc I have long hair, and a mask for obvious reasons but I work with a very laid back vet whose, shall we say...not a huge fan of surgical attire!!
Just wondered if anyone else

Re: Surgery Protocol

I have no idea what happened to my post...it disappeared... so here we go again
Does anyone know where I can find evidence based studies on the use of proper surgical attire? I'm doing a surgical nursing course and have to write a review based on facts and not just my own opinion.

If any of you can help that

If you have acces to journals, you will probably find plenty in the human medical sector.

And a quick question..... what exactly can an animal catch and suffer from, from us? MRSA is everywhere so apart from that what else? this is a genuine question. Animals immune system is slightly more skilled shall we say, than ours.

To answer the initial question... We have a seperate theatre where only scrubs etc are allowed, this is mainly for ortho ops.

All the rest are done in the day to day theatre, where as a rule no we dont wear scrubs or hats or masks, but gloves are always worn.

A bit off topic, but the lecturer at college today was saying how you should sheath or somehow cover the gas cylinders in theatre (we don't have piped gas).

Its always bugged me how mucky they are, and that trying to clean them gets you nowhere!

She recommended making the covers... dunno if they are available commercially?

Although saying that, it probably wouldn't make a lot of difference as we just wear our normal uniform and shoes for theatre, and usually only wear masks/scrubs/hats etc for ortho ops

I have worked in places though where we were all expected to wear scrubs, clogs, masks, hats and aprons in theatre
With regards to cylinders we used to use an air cylinder in theatre and used to drape it in either disposable drape or a disposable gown! either way it got covered.

with regards to hat and mask, did you know that one in three of us have MRSA up our noses. Think hat and mask should be routine! Change of footwear is the least effective at infection control.

Re: Surgery Protocol
we had some bright yellow padded plastic covers which just wrapped around the cylinders and fixed with velcro at one place i worked (i believe they had been 'acquired' through a contact we had in the fire brigade) hand on heart tho cant say we used them that much unless we had an ultra clean op in and as pointed out by one of the partners - gas cylinders are painted different colours for a reason so you can see at a glance what is in them and you cant if you hide them in fancy dress!

Re: Surgery Protocol

We wear our normal uniform and shoes, but a hat and mask.

Re: Surgery Protocol
