I have more power than the average voter. I am not sure who i will vote no to be honest. I really take the planet quite seriously so green issues matter alot to me but voting green is a bit wasted. Waiting to read the SNP manifesto but at the minute am thinking Lib dems.

Was thinking tories but in scotland thats wasted and there supporting the cull of badgers also so their defo not getting my vote ever!!

Really looking forward to the live debates tommorow shall be interesting to see.

Basically a win for Charles Kennedy (said in the voice obviously :P) Well, he's doing a decent job so I can't really complain.

I can understand where you are coming from on that one! - have just started a part time job of 20hrs a week, not entitled to any tax credit because it is under 30hrs. if i work an extra 10hrs ie 30 hrs total i am then entitled to tax credits - but surely if i am earning an extra 10hrs of wages i wouldnt need the tax credits because my income would be sufficient to support me. crazy!

maybe you would be. with children you would certainly be entitled to more of the 'state pot' than those of us without. However I would also advise that unemployment has nothing to recommend it - it a soul destroying situation and almost any job is better than not having one. ( my income from state benefits last year was @2,700 and that was my total income so be careful what you wish for)

Can I also add to the debate

I am a single mother, doing my best to bring up my two young sons as best I can. Because I work full time, and earn over £16000 per year, I am NOT entitled to free school meals, free school uniforms etc etc blah blah blah. Yes, I know I earn probably more than the average VN in practice - however, the only money coming into my home, is the money I earn, and I work damn hard for it.

My wages go towards my;

mortgage, fuel (£60 per week to go to work), tv license, car insurance, home insurance, life assurance (because of mortgage), rates, electricity bill, phone bill, home heating, groceries, general day to day living.

Yet, above all that, I still have to pay for my children to eat at school every day - these things all add up, and it is definitely an uphill struggle when you have two young kids in tow.

Sometimes I think I would be so much better off and have more money if I were to do nothing and live off the state.

I used to vote - religiously- until 2yrs ago!

It was local election time (so perhaps not as important as general elections, but even so), and I was still living with my mum. I had the day off work, and was spending it indoors catching up on TV I had missed (due to work )

So I'm sat in the sitting room, and I hear some post come through the letter box. I went straight out to collect it and found a leaflet from Labour. It said something along the lines of: 'Your local candidate "Blah Blah Blah" called today but you were not in, blah blah blah blah blah. Please consider voting for us'

HUH???? I WAS in, and IF they had actually bothered knocking on the door, they would have discovered this, and probably have secured my vote!!!!!!!!!!! (I had always been a Labour voter). Needless to say, I declined to vote them or any other party at that election, and have done so ever since!

In my opinion, if you can't be bothered to actually 'talk' to the people you 'represent', then you're not worth MY time!

I'm of the belief that if you don't vote, your political opinion doesn't count. Because you haven't voiced your opinion in the first place.
It'd be like letting a waiter/waitress choose your meal at a restaurant and then complain that it's not what you wanted. <--hopefully a good analogy!

The only group who can complain, who haven't voted, are those who can't (the young ones) as they can change the future and we should vote on their behalf.

This year, I get my chance to vote. I've not decided who I'm voting for yet, but I know a few parties I'm not voting for (can you guess which? *cough* the nationalists *cough*)

Alot of people are complaining about trust, remember there're other parties to vote for. Not just Conservative, Labour and Lib Dem.
You have:

The Green Party
Various Unionist parties
Various Socialist parties
Various Religious parties
The nationalist parties
Monster Raving Loony Party
& There's a party called "Jury Team" An umbrella group of Independent (not affiliated to any party) candidates who're in the running for parliament.

I didn't vote last year, but wish I had, then maybe labour wouldn't have got it!! bloody Gordon Brown has done sweet F.A in my opinion but make the economy worse with petrol prices, tax, & the recession!! looks like he's to blame for britain being in debt.. I WILL be voting this time round, wont be for gordon brown!!

In New Zealand its illegal not to vote too... Iv never voted tho because I think all the parties are as bad as each other. Although I live in the UK now (have british passport too) wont be voting here either!

I am standing for parish council this month and whilst I know its hardly parliament I would like to think that I am doing something even if it isnt earth shattering headlines (I am fighting for another dog waste bin and a street lamp and grit in the grit bins for when its frosty - so as I say hardly earth shattering stuff but could benefit a few people)

The bit that has annoyed me on this thread - and I mean really annoyed me was Caros attitude about purposely spoiling a vote, ie making a non vote, ie not voting but making out you are .what exactly is the point? is there a point ? or is it just to get a reaction? Either vote or dont vote but to put it bluntly dont p iss about ....if it makes you feel better ..... thats all I will say on that score. Caro may see it as a joke but I dont share the sense of humour if this is the case. I respect Caros opinion even if I dont agree with it.

I still stand by my original post that if you dont make an input into the voting process then you shouldnt be complaining about what you end up with.

But i reckon the snp should come out with a plan on how independence would work the benifits etc and do a refrendum after tht. I think i would base my vote on tht. But no i'd like independent scotland but only if it would work, which am sure it could somehow.

Toad I agree with you... none are worthy IMO, so no point in wasting my time going to vote If some were worthy then they would get my vote but seeing as I dont think they are, then I would just be lying now wouldn't I.

And Sorry loupylou, but I just dont see the point in voting for anyone you dont trust!

I could think of nothing worse than an independant Scotland, and I am as Patriotic as they come, but when the SNP want to tax the pants off us just so they can say....oh look at us, well thats just stupid! And Alex Salmond is a greedy fat *** IMO! who is as bad as the rest of the corrupt politicians. I wont vote for a corrupt state thanks.

Toad I totally disagree. You say you complain but you don't pick a party to vote regardless of trust or whtever. Why complain if your not going to even vote? I don't trust them either but i will still vote regardless. Also, women did die for your vote and well i see it as a mark of respect to go out and vote. The woman vote has alot to do with equality but the suffragettes deserve every single woman to go out and vote, like they fought for.

well am not hiding who am voting for, SNP, cnt say have read their policies but the alternatives are pretty crap, tories wont get a chance in scotland (thank god) and labour annoy the hell out me!! Also I would quite like an independent Scotland one day

People who don't vote piss me of! As already said, suffragettes died for woman to have that vote. Can't a see aproblem with what your doing Caro, least your making the effort lol!!

I am not sure whether I dreamt this or not but isnt it the law in some countries that you have to vote.

I personally think we should be made to vote and if we dont like any of the parties/people standing for election we should have the option of saying so on the voting slip in the hope that things change.

Maybe thats a bit airy fairy but hey thats what lack of sleep does for you!
