there is still a dish on the outside of the building from the people who had my flat previously but nobody knows where the cable is or if its still connected

If you sign up to Sky as a new customer, as noted above, you can get a whole range of fancy things for free... Just pay one month's subscription, then cancel (a sky rep told me this once!) Then you can still use the box as a kinda freeview receiver, but it'll be digital via the dish.

Upon cancellation of your service Sky can cancel the paid-for channels that your box can show on your telly, but they can't turn off your dish from receiveing them, so you can still watch all the free ones.

We have virgin, you get all the freeview channels plus a few extras like sky1, living and some comedy channels and probably some others that i either cant remember or dont watch!

We get the tv phone and broadband package which costs about £35 a month.

You also get on demand stuff, most of it is on the internet, i player and the like but its free on the tv and you can pay a couple of pounds and watch films too which is nice when there is nothing on and you dont want to go to blockbusters!!

Virgin seems pretty good, i think its a bit cheaper than sky but then i think sky is better so im not sure if i was getting it again whether id just pay a bit more and get sky?

I am in one of those areas that cannot get freeview..

Hmmm.. memory is a little hazy but I *think* when I first signed up to sky, as a brand spanking new customer, you get all the equipment and installation FOC! I think the basic sky package is about £15? After 12 months you get to cancel the contract and keep all the equip, which will get you freeview! And as I understand it, having all that sky stuff will mean you are OK once the terrestrial telly goes digital!

I cancelled after 12 months as couldn't afford it, but still had freeview, and restarted a few years later when I was working - no charge to restart! Now just have the basic sky, but with kids and docs

We have virgin l like it but you have to have cabel in to get it (from what l understand) we have the top package of normal tv but not get any sky. For that we get unlimited review (forget name) of previous programmes and also have their record box where we can record programmes and watch them when ever.(sky l think call it sky plus)
