Im gonna speak to my boss asap and ask if we can do it during the day. I doubt i will get enough support to be able to do it in the evening. My boss is lovely but thats the problem, she is too nice and lets the same people get away with not doing any work time and time again .

Thanks Saskia, i might just take u up on that offer after ive been back into work tomorrow. I really dont want to go in to be honest and ive never felt that way about my job since i started it.

Sal, I hope you get more support at work! Stock takes are a nightmare!

We are a mixed practice, and got the small animal side done in half a day - no probs!

But the large animal side - aggghhh! We heve to record EVERY bloody batch number and expiry date, and factor in the vets cars / lambing shed / LA emergency kit! Our boss does not expect us to stay over, and has said to get everyone involved - kinda hard though when sick animals needing admission / ops keep coming in. It's like everyone with a vomiting dog in a 10 mile radius waited until stock take day to bring them in! Lol!

I think a good old heart to heart with your boss in in order. If things are quite bad, your boss should know about it and should take appropriate steps to put it right. And, if you dont tell him/her about the problems, they will just fester on to the point you will end up leaving and I am sure thats not what you want to do.

Thanks Saskia, i needed to hear that. I have really wanted to refuse to do it if no one else will but wasnt sure whether to or not. I think your right tho and im gonna stand my ground on this one. Im so sick and tired of my job at the moment, im the only full time member of staff on the nursing team and EVERYTHING is coming back on me. Sorry to moan on, im just fed up

Thanks for all your comments on how you do your stocktake, its given me a few ideas on how to make it easier on myself

One other name? Sorry - not good enough in my book! ALL employed staff should be expected to take part in the stock take! In fairness, yes, we all have our roles to fulfill - HOWEVER, for something like this, obviously it cannot fall for one person - we all have to do it as PART OF A TEAM! Now, the only way to do this, is for the boss/manager of the practice to understand the work involved, therefore close the practice for the day, whereby EMERGENCIES ONLY are seen. If your boss cannot see fit to delegate ALL STAFF to carry out the stocktake, then, quite frankly, he/she is most definitely in the wrong job!

If you boss cannot realise this, then I suggest that YOU take appropriate action to ensure that YOU will not be the only one carrying out a stocktake under impossible circumstances - PERIOD!

i.e - YOU dont take anything to do with the stocktake Icklesal - that is the only way this will come to anything. At the end of the day - Why should YOU bother, when it is clear the rest of the staff couldnt care less??? For one day, you should become one of the 'couldnt care less' bunch of staff and let the boss sort it out. Unless you have a viable financial equity within the practice, its not your problem!

We do our stock takes in working hours...boss wouldn't expect us to stay late for it! Likes others have said, everyone is given a room/area (including vets) so it doesn't take long to do. We have lists for each room/area that can be amended each time.

We all chip in - we divide rooms or 'areas' up, so we all have a part to play in the stocktake - its only fair! Good luck!

As someone who has done stocktakes for firms and has watched and audited stock takes (over New Year and evenings as they are always done out of normal working hours in my experience) when working for a firm of accountants. Planning and delegation are the important points. By preparing lists (to be used and ammended each time) to be filled in with space for additions items and everyone doing their own sections (out of hours/ quiet times) stock taking takes no time at all. And if everyone does it then anyone can take over in charge and it does not become this fearful thing to do.

I used to work at a busy group but the partners would allow the clinics to keep ops to a minimum (even then only essentials) so that the staff who should have been operating could count stuff out in theatre/prep. Everyone from the receptionists to senior vets took part and would be done during working hours, bit unfair to expect people to stay late.

Thats totally c**p, i hate it when you work your butt off and it goes totally unoticed! I also dont understand how others can just stand by and let other staff members do all the work. I know exactly how you feel Nicky and i dont blame you for not wanting to do it alone, why should you.

I've recently done a stock take and I hate it!!! I did it on my own and boss didnt even seem to register Id done it so made a point of telling him!! Not doing it on my own next time though!!

Yeah same at our practice, no choice in the matter everyone gets a list of things they need to count no one likes it but has to be done.

Ditto what the others say! Everyone should be involved regardless of whether they have children or not. Each person has one room/area to do and the stock take can easily be done in a day!

I have 2 children AND I am a single mother - dont be fobbed off by that! Unless it has to take place out of hours, then I can see how that could pose a problem.

Our vets would have helped also, but we would have had one vet in particular who always seemed to be 'off' when it was taking place!

What time of the day do you have the stock take?

Sadly the majority of people i work with have children and seem to use them as an excuse not to do certain things, stock take being one of them. Lets see what happens anyway! Do your vets help out?
