We have a mastiff needing an xray tomorrow under GA. I am asking for help regarding circuit choice and oxygen flow rates. It has a resting RR of 40 and is 80kg. We have the choice of a circle or a parallel lack.
Thank you. x

Re: Help needed with giant breed anaesthesia

Glad to hear the anaesthetic went well.

After a sleepless night, pouring over my anaesthesia books and you lovely lot helping me!

Started off with a 4litre bag on a circle with a fully opened valve. Put him on 8litres of oxgen/min.

The bag seemed at full capacity so after a chat with the vet, we swapped him to a 6litre bag, which seemed to be a bit better.

Bad outcome however. He was PTS due to osteosarcoma.

So 8 litres to start then turn shut valve half way and reduce to what? 4litres?

You can go lower! but watch your inspired CO2 (not sure if you have capnograph or not....)
Here I am!!!!

I would echo what others have said and also pick a circle, plus use a 4litre reservoir bag. Once under GA resp rate might settle. Capnograph would be handy as low end title CO2 might be a prob due to tachypneoa (sp)

would start with a FGFR (frsh gas flow rate) of around 8litres/min and reduce it after around 15-20mins all things being well.

Can't think of anything else currently......

Good luck with it!

I also would use a circle, and if you have a heat and moisture exchange filter to attach between the et tube and circuit, I would use one of those as well. I believe your flow rate totally depends on what anaesthetic machine you have. Hope everything goes well
I personally would NOT use an HME. If using a circle frsh gas will be warmed once using low flow rates as it passes thru the soda lime, plus will add to mechanically dead space of the circuit which may cause probs with carbon dioxide levels

Re: Help needed with giant breed anaesthesia
