I attended a great cpd evening last week, where the speaker Carmel Mooney advised that when diabetic patients are coming in for a procedure that requires ga - obviously they are fasted that morning, same as any patient - but, the should have half of their morning dose of insulin.

Hope this helps

Hi

We did a GA on a diabetic dog for castration the other week (had hypertrophic testicles), and we did just that! Half dose insulin, and then blood glucose checked every 15 mins from pre-med to recovery. Had him on a 4% dextrose drip, and adjusted this according to the BG results. We then offered him food, as soon as he could stand & moitored his BG for the rest of the day. I can't remember if he had full dose insulin that evening or not

We got our info from the BSAVA anaesthesia manual, and pooch had a good GA and made an excellent recovery!

They also recommended making sure that diabetic animals are first on the ops list.
