I have signed up numerous times - never too sure how reliable signing up through boots advantage card, for example is. I finally got my driving licence last year (yay!) and signed up then also - I reckon that will be pretty reliable

I signed up for all parts - doesn't bother me about eyes etc.

That's just got me thinking...if you have a blood transfusion can you never give blood again? For example my sister had a transfusion when she had her baby, she's only in her 30's so has plenty of time left to be able to give blood but would she be allowed?

without going into too much detail - cancer/ surgery in the past makes quite a bit of me unviable, blood transfusions mean I cannot give blood. I can donate bits for scientific research tho.

I do wonder about that too, I mean I suppose they screen people first...but to what extent? Its a shame you can't donate (that sounds weird, not wanting you to have a fatal accident!!) , I know most of us technically can't donate blood due to needle stick inuries, but I would have thought they would screen us for diseases n things...hmmm... Im all intreagued....

However, my belly isn't- time for some tea!!

So many "What if" senarios (sp) with opt out which is my concern!! I just find it quite scary!!

nope it isnt the same - standard rabies vac doesnt prevent you from donating - the human immunoglob rabies vac does. (its the 'human' bit that makes the difference)

What?! I've had a rabies vaccination, does it mean you can't be an organ donor??

Thats rubbish if its true and they never told me when they did it!! I wouldn't have bothered if I had known...

I just think with the opt in thing, you are looking into it and are making sure you know and understand how you can help. If an opt out scheme was introduced would it be fair take the organs of a child who didn't ever get to have a say? Although am sure ther parents would have a say. But also would it be fair to take the organs of an elderly person who dies suddenly and didnt know about this new law?

I just think it's a little selfish so make people opt out rather than in. I know opt out has higher sucess with organ transplants and less people dying waiting for organs in other countries like spain. I just think its wrong on a level to take away that choice which is why i would opt out if did become a law or whteva.

I did read somewhere that they were thinking of doing this.. instead of people opting to donate... they got to opt not too.. otherwise - there having your bits & bobs! I personally think it's a good idea - at the moment, it's easy for people to register as a donor - and if things did change (system reversed)- it would be just as easy for people to simply sign saying they dont wish too

I'm a donor have been for years! and I've been a few times to donate blood, but because of health probs - they send me away should be able to donate blood in a few weeks though

I am on the organ donation list, I give blood and am on the bone marrow thing.

I totally diagree. It's such a personal thing, But to take the choice away from people I just think it's not right and if that choice was taken away I think i'd opt out of it all. People should be allowed to make up their own minds.

I think organ donation is great and medical advances are brilliant these days. Just sometimes wonder where it all ends though!!

i personally think that it should be automatic that when you die your organs can be harvested and put to good use - unless you specifically opt out.

i still can't give blood, just phoned up to check actually and once i've been on the same thyroxine dose for 3 months it should be fine.

I must admit I only signed up fairly recently, it was one of those things I kept saying i would do etc, I have however opted out of having my eyes/parts of my eyes removed. I dont know why but the thought of having my eyes/cornea/lens removed makes me feel upset.

they are welcome to everything else though!

I must say that i signed up when i got my p licence but have since signed up again online.

My friend's mum had severe cancer for years and had a premature baby early into her forties. She was a great friend, person and mum but a couple of years ago she suddenly died due to a brain anurysm (sp). My friend at 22 has taken her sis on with severe dissabilities on although the father is around to help greatly. She campaigns so much for cancer and great ormond street, never complaigns and is so much of her life.

I wished more people knew the great importance one small thing that won't ever affect them can do to improve the quality of so many children/adults life's.

I urge as many people as possible, no matter age, ethnic origin or sex to get involved with this cause.

My mother in law is O rh negative... which is less than 1% of the population.... so very very rare, she only had one child(Hubby) as she was told if she had another... she/child would need blood transfusions throughout pregnancy because of the rare group!
