The owners requested PTS, but the Vet refused... Do you think the vet should have done as was requested? She dealt with alot at school as she used a wheelchair alot due to mobility problems. I was told that she had three dogs and the bitch came into heat, inducing the dog to become aggressive.

I only know this as i was told by a third party but the problem is you can never know what you hear or read is the full truth or exaggerated.

I just hate that so many people are irresponisble as to not look into a breeds true behaviour and the laws and legislation involved.......but then the way social services are with children no wonder people can have the tragedies they do.

We too had to PTS a 4 month old collie as the owner said it was biting, it sounded like play biting, when they mouth your hands when they are young but the owners insisted it was biting and aggressive so there was nothing we could do, so sad

Re: Was Vet in the wrong?

Sorry Selena that sounds horrible, but the point is you learned from it and changed things, whereas it sounds like these people didnt.

I totally agree wih Emma as well, we often suggest a behaviourist first unless the prolem is extreme. We recently put a young staffy to sleep because she couldn't stand any other animal. She was absolutely lovely with people and it broke both the vet nd my own heart, she was only about a year old, but that morning had tried to throw herself through patio doors to get to sheep 1/2 a mile away! Sadly, some animals are beond help, but its especially terrible when they are so young and fine with humans

Re: Was Vet in the wrong?

Hi Selena,

I wonder what was actually said to the owners regarding pts (we all know how they interpret what has been said to them at times). I really doubt that any vet would refuse to put a dog to sleep that had already bitten when there were children in the house. Chances are they suggested seeing a behaviourist and the clients have misunderstood.

What a horrible story!

Re: Was Vet in the wrong?

True, but it only takes a split second for a dog to turn as i know to my own stupidity, i was in the same room as my son and my collie when Daisy bit him, (over a bone) They have been fine ever since, and we dont give food or bones in the same space as the kids now.

Re: Was Vet in the wrong?

That really is a horrific story. One major issue I have with it thoguh, is if they were so concerned when he dog bit the other childs' hand that they wanted it put to sleep - why was it then left in the same room as a 2 year old child?!

We had to put a 6 month old collie puppy to sleep as the owners said it had been agressive - although it had been a christmas stray with us for a few weeks it never showed aggression but becuas the new owners were adament thei 6 month old had pinned them down we HAD to PTS.. horrible thing to have to to but we couldnt rehome if there was and doubt it would bite.

Re: Was Vet in the wrong?

I notice the article said the vets claimed they could train the dog...if it were a behavioural issue and not an underlying health problem then surely a behaviourist would be the way to go, vets aren't behaviourists!

Re: Was Vet in the wrong?

OMG!!
I personally would hope all vets would consider aggression to be something more than behavioural - at times it could be due to something neurological or thyroid problems etc.. said in the article that the dog wasn't always aggressive! such a horrible thing!

Re: Was Vet in the wrong?

I do wonder if the attack was provoked in some way? With the papers you can never quite believe exactly what they say. I didn't think a vet would be allowed to refused euth?
