I'm speaking to my daddy over the weekend since it's my birthday so I will ask him when he calls. I would have thought that the older scaling models did more harm than good because of the harshness and lack of technique by most of it's users...and the rubber polishers only have the correct polishing movement in some angles, the rest of the angles they either don't reach or put too much pressure with not enough or too much of the paste distribution. This I would have thought would cause uneven ware and scratching.

I think you are right, i saw a display where the nurse used a polisher on a plastic tub and it burnt a hole straight through, i was told you should not used the polisher too hard and it should be on the slowest speed possible.

I went to see the hygienist yesterday and because I told her my teeth were sensitive she hand scaled them. and polished afterwards which tickled like mad. It does worry me that the person really knows what they're doing as you hear about the damage you can cause to pets. It did hurt a bit it places especially by the gum margins but I can actually see the difference today they look much cleaner.

I loath the old school scale and polish machines in this country. I hadn't had my teeth done like that since I was a child. In the US they use bicarb soda pressurized streams & ultrasonic teeth cleaning and polish and clean this way. The polish they use in the old school buffers makes me feel nauseous and it doesn't feel clean when you leave!!

I have only had a scale and polish once and I remember it really hurt! I've not had it done since as I've been told I don't need it. My mum is a dental nurse so I've always looked after my teeth. They are quite sensitive though.

Scaling bloody wrecks, I think if the water was warmer and not freezing it would make a difference.

My dentist knows what I do for a living and to be fair is always lovely with me and seems interested in what I do. I get polished every time.

I actually love going to the dentist, I come out feeling all clean and shiny afterwards.

I'm the same as Mrs Dot Dot, overbrushing my teeth so have to have sensitive toothpaste etc. It really hurts when I have a scale (normally at my 6 monthly check up) but they have never polished my teeth apart from once.

I must say that having a very bad experience with a dentist recently, I have now found an excellent one who I really trust and does a great job, I was very sceptical after my las experience.

I too thought that you had to polish after a scale due to the micro scratches the scaling produces.

It may be that it is the person who is doing the scaling is not using the correct technique, being to hasty etc that is causing you the pain.

I went to the dentist for a scale and polish yesterday. And yes it really hurt, brought tears to my eyes. Was very suprised when he only put polish on the front.

Want about the scraches that the scale makes on the back of the teeth?

Typical of me I didnt say anything!

My dentist always S&P and I normally get toothpaste on my face that they let me walk out of the building with, I dont realise until I have got back to my car and have a look in the mirror. Its embarrassing as I have to walk through the local high street!!

I dont mind the scaling of the molars, but hate the incisors being done, sends a shiver down my spine

A few years ago, I started just asking for a polish and no scale because I have always overbrushed my teeth, so now am paying the price with some gum recession and very sensitive teeth.... I am now very careful with brushing, use sensitive toothpaste, electric toothbrush and floss regularly etc etc but having a scale at the dentist B****** hurts! I don't think they have a clue.... so now I just have a polish, which is what I would do at first, on a dog or cat that just has staining or plaque, and if this works then I would leave it at that.

Just be careful with your daily oral care and refuse a scale, ask for a polish only... if NHS you will still have to pay for it but worth it for being pain free!
