Dog picked up dog warden from our village. Taken to local rescue kennels. Who knows what happened then but they apparently scanned for a chip and it had one, and was indeed a dog they had recenrtly homed an chiped themselves but they didnt ring the owners as they didnt think they would want it back?? Owner had rung day it went missing to report it to them but dog not taken in for 2 days after that, they didnt think to ring again as they had reported it. I knew about the dog and only when friend mentioned to me about appeal in paper for missing shepherd that we put 2 and 2 together and rung the owners and told them to check the kennels as dog fitting description had definitely gone there. They phoned but dog rehomed the day before. They were devastated. AWFUL. Why do we other pushing microchips when places choose to ignore them.

Re: Dog Ownership
BUT the dog will be legally yours if you 'rehome' it through a proper organisation
That's a really stupid rule lol. We have a local rehoming charity who we deal with a lot and know the owner personally so will maybe ask her about "rehoming" him to me. As I've said above, if an owner did turn up I'd give him back providing they seemed genuine and weren't going to be beating him up or anything, but I'd like to legally own him in case an owner turns up who doesn't really want him, just wants him back cos he's theirs, if that makes any sense lol.

Re: Dog Ownership

I looked this up recently. Its not a case of finders keepers, even if in 5 years time an owner comes forwards you will have to give the dog up.

BUT the dog will be legally yours if you 'rehome' it through a proper organisation like a local rescue centre or dog warden (crazy I know), this happened to a client at work, they told the dog warden they had found a dog and had it for 2 weeks, they put posters up told all vets in 20mile radius and put ad in the local paper. The dog warden took the dog for 7 days then officially gave it to the people. A couple months later this bloke claimed it was his, kicked up a huge fuss and tried to take them to court who said it had been officially rehomed to the new people as dog warden had it and the people had reasonably tried to find the owner. The bloke was pissed off but could do nothing.

You can also ask a local small rehoming centre to 'rehome' it on paper officially for you for a donation?

There is info on the national dog warden website. Hope this helps!

Hmmm, I think I would see what the dogs reaction would be in that situation personally...

I had a call once from a member of the public (while doing petlog) about a cat that this lady had "taken in" to her home about 15 months previous to the visit.Anyway the cat had been with her a while, the vet scanned him and he had a chip! the lady herself contacted us, and we had the owners details.. this lady was in tears on the phone to me saying she did not want to give him up as he was very special to her. However in the course of the convo, she agreed that if he had been her pet all along and the shoe was on the other foot, she would definitely want her cat back. I contacted the owner with this ladies details, and it turns out that this cat had been a family pet for over 10 years and had grwn up with her daughter, they had done all the usual things of advertising in the area etc contacting vet surgeries and cats homes, but to no avail... they had resigned themselves that he was probably dead. The owner was so grateful that he had been found and desperately wanted him back. I asked her to call me once she had done so.... and even after all that time the cat recognised her and was so very happy to see her.

All I am saying is... hte owners may well have done their best to find this dog, and I know if it was me I would definitely want my dog back,
What about where rescue centres are involved? If I had brought the dog to a centre and they'd put him up for rehoming where would they stand if the original owner saw the new owner with the dog...? I'm sure it happens sometimes?
