definatley!!! it really annoys me when vets dont ask if the owners would like a few minutes with the euthanased pet, and instead just hurry them out the door!

And to add insult to injury, I have met some vets who will start shaking out the crem bag the second the client leaves the room - sound travels! Even seen one vet bundle a dog headfirst into a crem bag at a home euth, and then carry it out over his shoulder

Love the vet in question to bits! But more for their personality than client skills!

HAHA!

For the perfect vet to work with... hmmm... in no particular order.... I reckon compassionate to patients, good client care, keeps up to date with stuff, appreciates their nurses for nursing, listens to their concerns, and lets them do the nursey stuff, needs to able to take the pee, have a laugh and have the pee taken in return, will 'muck in' when needed, sociable, and must know how a kettle, phone and mop work!

Re: The Perfect Veterinary Surgeon

I've got my own personal perfect vet but I'm not naming the things he does to make him perfect!!

Re: The Perfect Veterinary Surgeon
In my experience the main thing is to not be afraid to ask for help - as I think someone else has mentioned, vets aren't expected to know everything off the bat. If vets have come in acting superior and being arrogant it devalues us all. They lose out on the help and point of view of someone with, quite often , years of practical experience. While the nurses are left feeling unappreciated - and less inclined to try to help when things inevitably hit the fan. I'm not suggesting they should run all clinical decisions by the nurse, but I tend to notice that new grads have learnt a lot about being a vet and (in some cases) nothing about how to work as part of a varied, busy and dynamic team of people.

I like it when you can consider the vet to be your friend.
I suppose the best vets I have ever worked with are the ones where we have equal respect for each others skills and a common aim to get the job done the best we can - where there are no 'airs or graces' or treading on toes/eggshells , and everybody feels that whatever their position within the practice be it cleaner, receptionist. nurse, practice manager junior vet, senior vet they are playing an important part in the future of that practice.
Exactly! Just because someone is a vet doesn't make them a better person than say a nurse or a reception. A mutual respect is vital and makes a pleasurable working environment..
Here here! I second that!

I feel so lucky to work with a team of people like you have described...cleaners, receptionists, trainee nurses, qualified nurses, vets, practice manager...all a team striving for the same thing and without one of them the place would not be the same. I feel like we're a family, not just work mates

Re: The Perfect Veterinary Surgeon
I suppose the best vets I have ever worked with are the ones where we have equal respect for each others skills and a common aim to get the job done the best we can - where there are no 'airs or graces' or treading on toes/eggshells , and everybody feels that whatever their position within the practice be it cleaner, receptionist. nurse, practice manager junior vet, senior vet they are playing an important part in the future of that practice.
Exactly! Just because someone is a vet doesn't make them a better person than say a nurse or a reception. A mutual respect is vital and makes a pleasurable working environment..

Re: The Perfect Veterinary Surgeon
For me it has to be:

Patients / calm etc

Excellent client care

Compasion

Drive and enthusiasm

Funny - up for a laugh

A good friend

recognising a job well done

Being appritiative

Supportive

TREAT the nurses to a night out (got to be fair - our vet occationally takes us out .)

And most importantly - Knowing that you can't be a good vet without good nurses

My vet has just cooked me curry for my night duty I do have perfect vets, love working with them

Re: The Perfect Veterinary Surgeon

Bedside manner is a must! Owners need someone sensitive at times.
Just to be clear, I am NOT looking for what you think makes a good veterinary surgeon from a pet owner's perspective. I am looking for what makes the perfect veterinary surgeon to WORK WITH (not shouting, btw, caps just for clarity).

Would also be helpful to try and keep one suggestion per post (easier for me to sort through).

Can be character qualities, but equally, and perhaps more importantly (because not everyone is blessed with the character of a saint!), I'm looking for things that the perfect vet DOES which makes them good to work for.
I was thinking from a nurses prospective. Our clients feelings are important to me as i am sure they are to other nurses, esp those clients whom i've got to know. I want them to be treated well when they come in with Fluffy to be PTS, i don't want it to be in and out in a flash...to me that is an embarrassment. So i'll sick with my good bedside manner.
