How do you know if you have a cold sore?
I have a sore crusty bit at the side of my mouth, that really hurts if I open my mouth. There was no tingling or anything.
am I best treating or leaving

Re: Cold Sore?

Oooh thanks. I did wonder if I was anaemic as I have cravings for marmite, which I get when I'm anaemic. (and eat it 3" thick) I'm also shattered and have been a bit stressed.

I'm going to Tesco in a minute, so I shall see what I can procur (other than things for making muffins!)

Re: Cold Sore?

P.S After trying various things on it to try to make it less painful ( its when you open your mouth its horrible) I found Savlon the most effective even if its a little random. Must be the cholorhexidine in it

Re: Cold Sore?

Hello !

I don't get cold sores but I do get what you describe when I am run down. I especially used to get them and have real probs getting rid of them when I was anaemic. Some people just get these when their immune sysem is run down but mine would be when getting inadequate sleep, poor diet ( night shifts) and drinking too much caffeine which would aggravate my anaemia. Worth considering whether there was nay chance you might have slightly low iron levels. More likely when veggie, having period or taking NSAIDs or obviously a combination of the three . Can try taking general good quality vitamin supplement, increasing iron through reg sources inc spinach, green leafy veg. Reduce the amount of caffeine you drink esp 1 hour either side of a meal ( decreases your ability to take up iron from your food) and drink fruit juice with a meal ( vit c does the reverse to caffeine). If not sure though see doctor /occupational therapist ( think you have access to one ? ) X

Re: Cold Sore?

Certainly sounds like a cold sore or to give it its proper name - Herpes virus simplex 1. If you catch it early enought then itsdefinately worth treating with the Compeed patches but they work the best before it gets too crusty. Now its crusty I would use Zovirax (better using Boots or Tesco own brand - much cheaper) and continue until the soreness & redness goes away. I also take daily Vit C tablets not sure if they help but I did run out at Christms & forgot to get more & now I have stinking flu and a cold sore coming! Now you've got them, you'll get them any time you're run down or stressed - joys of being a vet nurse - that'll be all the time!

Against popular belief you won't spread them across your face by touching them - the virus is in your body! But they won't get better if you keep touching them. You can pass them to other people so use your own facecloth, towel & mug if possible.

You may be able to tell that I get cold sores!
