i do work for a CVS practice, but i've worked for other cvs practices that don't do this.
i think the practice standards expect only the vets to have the keys (the inspector asked me this on the visit), however

the vets have keys, and i'm the only nurse to have one, as head nurse. this is mainly because of the ordering of drugs, but also because the vets usually don't have theirs with them when you need it (they usually ask me!)

i'm not allowed to give my keys to svn's or other vn's without asking what drugs they want. i trust all my staff implicitly, but that's the conditions of me having a key.

But hey if the new training comes in and we can be an auxillary tp then maybe, fingers crossed for me .

Ive told my boss that i think the vets should have keys. Everyone else thinks a nurse should have a key but im the only one who will be there everyday and im not really a nurse. They argue that we keep our money in the safe overnight so we need to have access to the dd safe/cupboard before the vet comes in, i argue that as far as the rcvs are concerned we do not have to keep our money in the dd cupboard so therefore need no access to it before a vet would come in.

It prob does make sense that i have a key if im going to be there more than anyone (non of the vets are even full time!! just me and a lady who does admin/reception) but i dont want to be doing it wrong and get into trouble, or get anyone into trouble.

We have a dd register, i actually do all that at the moment because i do the ordering. Our HVN is due back from maternity next week (but is only coming back part time) hence the reason ive had to do it. Ive done all the medicinal products section of practice standards, think i deserve a payrise for all this lol

Re: Controlled drugs cupboard

All the vets have one-but never carry it with them! its always upstairs in their bag! and three of the nurses including me have one-we don't have a qualified permanent yet so makes sense for us to have one-the vets always ask us nurses to use our keys!

Re: Controlled drugs cupboard

I dont feel its a matter of trust where I work, If everyone had keys then it would mean over 30 keys at work through the day which I dont feel is safe either.

Its fine that your boss wants to give you responsibility of having cd cupboard keys but he needs to be made aware that he is responsible incase anything goes missing and not you. Do you have accurate recordings of use of the controlled drugs in your practice??Thats a requirement under the RCVS practice standards. The vets are really the ones who should have the keys as they are the ones who prescribe and therefore are the only ones who should need access but in our practice we sign them in and out (RVN's and SVN's)and the cd's are checked morning and night. We also write down drugs used on a whiteboard to keep track. As for your practice not having rvns be v careful as as an ANA you shouldnt really be doing things that a n svn/rvn is allowed to do. A student rvn can but not an ANA always. See i did the ANA qualification and then iwent straight on to do my training as an svn so i can do stuff. Try twist your boss's arm to train you and its clear youl make a fanstastic RVN if your boss wants to give you the responsibilty and you deserve more money by the sounds of it for so much responsibility. Hope this helps X
