I am thinking of doing some locum work in between working in my usual practice. Just wondering if there is such a thing as an average rate of hourly pay for locums? Not sure how much is good and worried I might get ripped off if i dont have

Re: Quick question.....

2nd jobs are taxed at a different rate . yes it is possible for you to have a contract which excludes you from working at other practices in the area - I think my last one said I wasnt allowed to work at another practice within a 40 mile radius - and I am afraid my answer to that was 'pay me a decent wage in the first place and I wouldnt have to go looking elsewhere'

Re: Quick question.....

just check your current work contract. Some bosses may write into your contract that you can not work for another veterinary practice whilst in employment with them!

Re: Quick question.....

I registered with a locum agency and they put me in touch with an 'umbrella company.' They basically handle all your wages for you and whats tax free. ie mileage. It was explained to me that you are in principle setting up your own PLC company. All very new to me and quite confusing to be honest! That was with RIG who have been really helpful.

Re: Quick question.....

When I locum I charge more to. Your rates should reflect your experience and skills. I am worth my hourly rate + some. Most of the locum agencies can take you on as BACS payment and organise your tax/NI.

Ref tax. correct me if I'm wrong but I think 2nd jobs get taxed at a different rate?

Your best bet is to speak to a locum agency.

Vets ow idea is good. Although they can sometimes be all or nothing.

Re: Quick question.....

I ask more than that and do not have a problem getting work. I do feel that you should not tell a person not to charge more as just because you get one amount does not mean that there is not work out there for decent payed work, you also limit an amount that that person may well get/have got for a job. Those of us doing full time have to charge a decent wage. It is easy to undercut people when you are just dipping toes into the water for pin money.

Re: Quick question.....

I used to locum lots, around my full time job. Depending on where I went ranged from £10 - £12 per hour. Don't try and ask for more, as practices don't tend to pay much more. I was always very busy with locum work from March until Nov time. I registered as self employed and I suggest you get a good accountant as the Inland revenue are checking on vet nurses more regularly. You will then be able to claim for mileage etc against your expenses (this will be done at the end of the tax year so don't put it on your locum bill to practices). If this is too much hassle, then just ask the practice you are locuming for, to put you on their PAYE.

If there is a Vets Now near to you, you can join the bank of locum nurses and they will contact you if they require assistance
