When i started my job i already had a holiday booked, so i told them this which was fine. I would say after 3 months the employer should allow some holiday, worked out according to how many days she's given per annum, like has already been said.

When our new receptionist started - she took a holiday about 2 months after her start date.. could she provisionally book it for now? see what they say??

as a general rule of thumb I wont take holidays until I've been in a job for 3 months just so I have proven I can work prior to taking hols

Again the number of days depends on what it says in her contract, but working on the 5.8 weeks rule she would be entitled to 7 days, however if her employer includes the bank hols in her holiday entitlement she would be entitled to 5 days.

I would get her to approach her employers and ask the questions directly if she doesnt have a contract
