Aghhh in an hour and half, i have to go back to dentist to complete my root canal treatment... good job too, cos yesterday my temporary filling chipped slightly while eating some crisps. oopsy!!

Im not looking forward to it... wierd aint i... its not like my tooth hurts anymore cos he taken most of pulp and stuff away with the infection 2 weeks ago. Today is a final flush out and the tooth packed and filled and then i guess he will prepare it for a crown to be made and fitted!!

thanks. I am now, gums hurt a little from injection site and have the odd twinge now and then if i catch my teeth together or if im eating. I can eat!!!! Although its only sausage rolls, spaghettli hoops, soup, cheesy puffs, toast.... better than nothing, haha. The ABs have defo kicked in now as well i think, so all is good, havent had to take ANY pain relief yet today. Have booked half day at work on 29th when i have to go back in the afternoon to complete my treatment.

I either pay another £150 for a metal crown to be fitted, or i fork out £350 for a white crown.... to be honest i think ill just have the metal silver one... as noone is exactly guna see it, not even when i smile. lol.

Hey all. Thanks for the info and advice. I woke up this morning in more pain, ( sal I couldn't get past that stuff u told me, swellin was quite bad, thank u very much though, I will use again this weekend if needed) I woke up to my right side of neck more swollen and all gums on bad tooth side very inflamed. Got to dentist at 8.15 this morning, had a look and said right ill start root canal now. 2 injections later to numb cos I couldn't bare him toucin the tooth, he started to drill... ...oh the smell was horrible, I can only assume was my mouth ad he started pullin bits out with forceps. Was a rotten pus like smell. 45 mins later he says come back in 2 weeks to complete the treatment and the mouth and swellin has settled. I'm on weeks worth of amoxacillin. (Only had ABs for catbite end of January, lol) So for now I feel bit more relieved and that after a day of abs I should settle down. Fingers crossed lol Xx

I have had root canal tmt, personally I never felt a thing. I have fillings minus the jabs as I cant be bothered with the 5 hours(I have timed it of numb face) my dentist loves me.. I sit there get the work done and leave.. my hygieneist (sp?)who wanted to do a scale and polish wanted to give me a jag once I said, no its ok, she said you dont know what I am going to do... to which I said .. yes I do..imagine a jag for a scale and polish!!

I hope you are better soon Jenny.. if its a back tooth Ie the last tooth personally i would have it pulled, it is not going to make any difference to the way your teeth sit. I had all my wisdom teeth removed(apparently my mouth was too small to accomodate them lol imagine that) and have had my back molars removed rather than filled yet again!

I went to the emergency NHS dentist when I first developed the abscess - it was extremely painful & I wasn't even able to just touch my teeth together. He wouldn't even touch my tooth that first day, just wrote a prescription for abs. Within a couple of hours of taking the first one, the pain had lessened. I would be surprised if they actually start work on it tomorrow - hope all goes well anyway.

Oh god i CANNOT go another week like this just on ABs, as the pain relief im taking doesnt seem to hit the pain anymore! 13 hours to go till i can see it seen too.

I want them to hopefully do something 2moro, releive the pressure, cos i havent eaten properly since wed when the pain became more intense. At the mo, im attempting to eat cheesy puffs for dinner.lol

Sounds like you need abs for an abscess. I had to have a weeks worth of metronidazole to clear up the infection before they did the root canals.

Its a weird sort of pain isn't it? Glad I had mine done - just saving for the crown now!

SORRY , need to scream!!! One more day of hell left, and 2 more sleeps till i can get my tooth sorted... I now cant eat anything without so much pain, before i could eat on other side of my mouth, now i cant even close my mouth properly with teeth together to form a gritted teeth smile, as it hurts to even touch the tooth, but is NOT sensitive to cold anymore... the tooth looks almost a grey colour now, eekkk!! I have a dead tooth now, great!!!

Dont ever opt for extraction if a tooth can be saved. A good dentist would always recommend this. These are the only teeth we have and once gone thats it. Root canal shouldnt ever hurt with pain relief. Gummy people dont look good,

I currently have a dental abscess on a tooth I had some work on a few months ago, have been advised need root canal and crown or extraction so having crown..bit gutted to discover NHS only offer gold crowns now..eugghh ! I have one other crown which I had down privately pre becoming a VN but can't stretch to that cost now. I have been staving off the abscess with an extended course of ab's as I have needed to do some locum wor to raise the money to get my crown done :-(

I have had loads of problems with my teeth, four abscesses (excruciating) and a nerve prob which sounds similar to yours (double excruciating, smack my head on a desk seriously considering a vetergesic self injection painful). I had the nerve 'killed' in that one, not quite sure what that entailed but did the job and has been fine since, though it will prob need a crown in the future.. my four front teeth are crowned, had to have four root canals through the crowns, not painful to have done, just mildly annoying sitting in the dentists chair for hours... I also grind my teeth at night, recently saw a specialist who suggested either a mouthguard or something called occlusal equlibration. Being as I don't wanna put plastic in my mouth forever I am going for the latter! Will cost over £400 though as having done privately. ouch. lucky my family will help or I could never afford it now! To go back to the original prob, I would try and save the tooth, personally I would rather try than lose it, after all, once its gone, unless you can afford implants you won't get it back! Also maybe ask for some prescription pain relief or get some OTC codiene mix, worked pretty well for me afterwards as it can take a while to settle. Good luck!

mouthguard didnt help me that much - but I did try it. hypnosis has helped me a lot (I know this is a stress thing) and when I know I am starting to grind I will start self hypnosis straight away, either that or I use some of the acupressure sedation points which helps too

get a root canal hun and let them put in a crown. if you have an extraction you will have more chance of getting dry socket which is a whole new world of pain. You also need to be sure you have the surrounding teeth checked by xray so you know there isn't any other root damage in the near by teeth as they can seem like they are in one place but are possibly not.

arghh! i have that! it is driving me crazy, keeps waking my boyfriend up at night, i know i do it cause i'm stressed but i just can't help it! dentist was on about getting a mouthguard made but not sure how successful that would be...

Ive had root canal filling and an extraction (on the same tooth!) I had the root canal filling done abroad and 6 years later whilst eating a toffee the filling came out, the dentist said i couldnt have another root canal filling on the nhs as i had had it done before (even though it wasnt in the same country!) and she was amazed when i didnt know i had had a root canal filling (it hurt, but not too much). My options were a crown or an extraction and i opted for the extraction due to cost (im a vet nurse!!) which the dentist wasnt pleased about. The extraction hurt ( a lot!) but the pain afterwards when i developed dry socket was undescribable! However im glad i had it taken out, no more pain ever!

i had root canal, it sounds awful and conjures up images of utter horror but to be honest was no worse than having a filling. uncomfortable yes, and god i hate the feel of those vibrations from the drill, but painful? nahhh

I'd recommend keeping it if you can afford the root canal, you will prob feel them taking out the nerve if you do have the root canal, as it seems to be very sensitive & sore, but once the nerve is gone, you should have no pain at all, worth it to keep your tooth, I did a stint many years ago as a dental nurse, lasted 9 months...its probably all changed now, but if it was me...I would defo keep it. VN was my calling....looking into (some) peoples dirty gobs....not for me...and the smell of an infected abscess...haunt me forever! in my opinion...nothing worse than a toothache... poor you...not nice!

Just had root canal treatment today! I opted to have it done rather than just extract the tooth, cos of the change it would make to my normal bite - ie, changing the way my other teeth fit together & therefore wear them down quicker. Its a bit more complicated than, if you can't see it, just have it out!

I had a tooth done today with 4 roots - took 1 hour. No pain involved (except to my bank balance). Let me know if you need any more information. But basically, if you can afford to have it done, then do it.
