My final point would be this, student human nurses get a bursary of about £500 a month to train up via degree route, would this work if vet nurse students were given a bursary whilst in placements and that obv still with the college route?

Who would pay for it though? Doubt the government would do as its the NHS that funds it for student nurses. Can't see practices doing it either unless they knew for definite they would be employing the SVN for definite, even so it seems unlikely.

Re: vet nurse training changes...

Well just heard from tutor last night that there is no funding for part time training and with having to be away from home for 4 weeks at a time for the full time course, it looks like its the end of the road for me. I have a wee girl age 11 and theres no way I could leave her for this amount of time plus I cant live on fresh air! I will finish my ANA and then see what happens. I am so down about this, it just doesnt seem fair to us older students, I guess if your a teenager the worlds your oyster, although tbh if I was an employer I would rather have someone older that I didnt need to constanly tell what to do, but hey ho thats life x

Re: vet nurse training changes...

Does this rule about mature students not getting funding apply in Scotland?
I think the govements should concentrate on under 25s so they don't end up 26 with no qualifications and no real job prospects, fixing that problem will mean funding for over 25s wont be as needed!

I really think that people of all ages should have the opportunity to train as a VN.

From my personnal experience, I would always perfer to take on someone slightly older or older as a student VN for a number of reasons.... mainly because they usually have life experience outside the vet world, which counts for alot, they also know what they want... haven't gone into things lightly from a financial side / working conditions etc. They know what has to be done to qualify and accept that this is what you have to do.

I will be very sad if people over the age of 20-25 will be excluded from training..... there is alot to be said for you all.... in attitude/ work ethic etc etc and if this happens the VN world will be a poorer place!
Totalyy agree, that in the world of VN over 25s are a great assest to the veterinary practice and most people under that would go into it half heartedly! My original point was just the under 25s dnt get that much money really!

I realise i may have seemed harsh last night about it guys and am sorry. Just have spent that last 3 years with virtually no money and a crap load of debt so don't understand where people think under 25s get loads of money!!

My final point would be this, student human nurses get a bursary of about £500 a month to train up via degree route, would this work if vet nurse students were given a bursary whilst in placements and that obv still with the college route??

4) Work experience again. If someone is working effectively for free, will the level of commitment from the student be the same? I mean, the hours are long and the pay is poor when you are employed but that's not the reson many of us went into the job. Could you honestly do the job without any financial rewards? I know I couldn't.
Just thought I would reply to this post as I am a degree SVN, currently in my final year. Format of my degre is 1 year full time at uni - 15 weeks placement in TP - 1 full time year at uni - year placement in TP - final year full time at uni.

Due to breaking my leg missed my first 15 week placement - but I then did 18 months full time in one TP with no pay, reason behind this was that I was 'extra' so they couldn't afford to pay me, except that for most of my time there we were so short staffed I often got no lunch break and rarely finished when I was supposed to.

I got paid for any overtime I did and weekends on call, and I got £100 per month towards travelling (did not cover what i spent on petrol), which is how I managed, but I still spent a year getting even more into debt.

I have paid for RCVS enrollment, RCVS exams, bought my own uniform, have £21,000 student loan already thanks to new tuition fees and my practice got free labour for 18 months. In contrast, the day release NVQ student in the same practice got a wage, all RCVS stuff paid for, milage allowance to and from college (she travelled less miles to college than I did every day).

I was the most dedicated of the staff there, not that the rest of the team weren't amazing, they were - but I honestly believe I enjoyed my job more than anyone else there, was always the first to volunteer to stay after surgery if vets admitted something, volunteered to cover other people's shifts etc.

I somethimes have moments when I regret doing the degree thanks to all this, but I originaly wanted to be a vet, and only narrowly missed out on the a-levels to get in - I didn't want all that time to have been a waste which is why I chose the degree. I absolutely adore my job, and can't wait to finish my final year so I can get back into practice and I feel so sad for all the people out there that desperately want to train but don't have the opportunity - and I do feel thankful every day.

I'm 23 and have been trying to find a placement for over a year with no luck, I have contacted all the vets withing 40 miles of me, offered to do voluntary work etc etc and no luck. I've had a couple of interviews but been unsuccessful for various reasons. After contacting my local college regarding the new training they told me:

The proposed training will run like this:
Full time two year course will run from our Edinburgh, Leeds and Huntingdon centres, you will not need to be working in a Training Practice as you will be at college full time and we will then find you a placement when the time comes.

Day Release 3 year course will run from Leeds, Huntingdon and Potters Bar centres, you will need to be working in a training practice and will be released 1 day a week for college.

I have attached an application form for you to complete if you so wish.

If you need any further information then please do not hesitate to contact us.

I have applied for the course and am currently doing a temp office job and saving every penny I can so that I can afford to not work for 2 years. I'm in a good situation as my husband is able to pay all the bills on his wage so I just need to save enough for my fees and petrol so I know I'm very lucky in that respect. But without the option for full time training I know there is no way I can train to be a vet nurse as there are just too many barriers in the way.

Re: vet nurse training changes...
VN's are seen as a "non-essential" area. Non essential? Try telling that to an owner with a sick animal!

It's all geared so that the unemployed statistics look better on paper. Never mind everyone else who has fought so hard to get into practice and would study hard given half a chance.

I ask everyone again to write to both their local MP and the RCVS to point out that the new scheme is discriminatory, ill thought out and generally rubbish. The colleges alos think it's a bad idea and are crying out for people to write and get their voices heard. What might be nice is some sort of help from RCVS or VNACs to encourage more practices to do this. Our students have been employed for several years and its unlikely that they will leave after qualifying.

No offence Loopy but why did you quit the degree if you want to be a vn so much? I know you said you hated it but surely if it's what you really really want to do then you would have been better off sticking with it instead of doing something different? I'm not being nasty, just curious.
ah so many reasons where do i begin!!

Firstly, i was in newcastle for 1st yr! For obv reason that was not good at all!! But i got thro it! And it was alryt!

Secondly, money! akthough have not had a job for a while, placement used to cost a fortune with travelling and things!

Thirdly the uni! Badly run course and just was losing the reason why i wanted to be a vn!

And a few others! I would rather stick to doing animal biology and going into teaching! For a start the moneys better and i can at least be a teacher anywhere in the world!

Write down what you need to say if you think you will forget any of it or get flustered and see if they would be able to help you in any way. If every single trainee did this with their MP it may draw attention to the problem. And dont be fobbed off - if one side isnt interested try another - dont forget its coming up to an election - they want your vote!

Re: vet nurse training changes...

I agree its great that the government as finally doing something to help get younger people out working and studying but what about us over 25s? Dont we deserve to be able to study?
Not saying that you dont deserve to stduy but the funding is not that great!!

My 420 is the max you can get, i live with my bf also a student! so my 420 goes like this 225 rent, 80 for bills cats food etc and easily another 50 for travel to uni, and then theres the fact am 2 grand in my over draft!

The fundings there like it should be but sadly its basic and its not that great!!

I think the govements should concentrate on under 25s so they don't end up 26 with no qualifications and no real job prospects, fixing that problem will mean funding for over 25s wont be as needed!

anyways i wait the replies on how wrong i am!
I don't neccesarily think you are wrong, but I am well over 25, and have been doing this job for the last 12 years. Stuff happens - I fell pregnant at 25, halfway through my training - I just got back into practice last year, and am probably one of the last 'mature' svn's to get goverment funding.

If I hadn't have been able to get funding, my practice would have been unable to let me train! I am one of those long time unqualified desperate to become RVN, and I am glad I got my chance at L3 and therefore qualification before all the rules changed!

However, tbh I haven't looked into the age vs funding thing very closely at all, but I understand (perhaps wrongly) that uni's look quite favourably on mature students. Presumably the VN degree will still be running? I know the post grad debts will be a *beep* as well as living on a student income, but there is still a way to get qualified if you are over 25 surely!

If i could get qualified i could earn more money and might just be able to move out. Wheres my goverment funding??? I cant afford to put 2 new tyres on my car nevermind pay for training. 10 years of trying to get a training position, i think ive finally given up. Dont think i can take it anymore, ive worked my a** off to get where i am now and i still am not being given the opportunity to train (my employers just wont take me on as a svn).
