Apparently Germany and Norway routinely do this procedure.
Anyone seen it before?
I'm trying to find some research

Re: Ovarectomy in Cats
Does anyone know if this leads to more pyo's in older cats? I know it is much rarer in cats anyway, but having seen 2 cats with pyo in my first year as a trainee I wouldn't have thought the risk was low enough to warrant leaving the uterus?
Pyos are more likely to be affected by reproductive cycles and these will be stopped once the ovaries are removed anyway so risk of pyo should be minimal, if at all. There is the chance of developing stump pyometra if there are any remains of ovarian tissue but when done laparascopically, there shouldn't be any chance of this happening.

Re: Ovarectomy in Cats

In Tenerife Tony the vet who used to come out made a rule that unless he knew he had neutred the dog or cat it was getting done.
Well all rescue dogs/bitches we sent to germany and went done got done there so dont know where that info comes from. They are very hot on neutering if your pet isnt done you pay a very high yearly licence fee. Well used to and can not see it changing.

Ovarectomies tend to be done during laparascopic spays as the uterus is rarely removed then. Haven't seen it being done via the conventional route though!
