As of yet I haven't encountered any human nurses that disregard the VN qualification and profession - my sister as well as other members of my family are nurses and all have said their training in some parts is nowhere near what is involved in ours, esp a+p. Someone who nurses and has trained professionally to do so should be entitled to use the term 'nurse' irrelevant of whether they do so for people, animals or dental care!

I agree with everybody on here!

Those human nurses and their so called profession obviously have no clue just how much hard work veterinary nurses put in to become qualified. Until recently all you had to do to become a human nurse was a 3 year diploma (similar to the new diploma that is about to be coming out in the vet nurse world). Because they are changing human nursing so that you have to have a degree to do it they think that they are better than everyone else. What they seem to be forgetting is that it took them many long years to get the recognition they have now. They should understand the problems that we are curently facing instead of adding to them.

sorry to rant folks but it really annoys me. what hypocrites!

My sister doesn't know there are different types of diabetes!

I felt that as well as not wanting anyone else to be a "nurse", they really have no idea what other nursing professions involve.

This is my point exactly and the reason I brought this to everyones attention. If this were to happen, we could end up with everyone (including qualifieds)in the VN profession being unable to call ourselves Veterinary Nurse :(

We could of course do a throwback to 40 years ago to the times when the title Nurse was protected to RGNs (and their equivalent at the time) and just call ourselves RANAs Seems a bit silly for them to want legislation changing back again.

dont know if I have misinterpreted the replies? which is quite possible

my point was not that human nurses dont think vet nurses should be called vetnurses but that human nurses are not happy that 'nurses' without qualifications are able to use the title. So from that point they are having the same problems we are having.

Also, as shown here in the online dictionary, it does not specify that it has to be care of humans or even involved in medical care at all, as in the case of a nursery nurse...

Unless they are going to re-write the dictionary, how can this suceed? Are they also going to retitle their auxhiliary nurses and other titles that are clear and explanatory of others' levels of qualification in the caring professions?

You see this is yet another reason for protecting it though.... even those silly "HUMAN" nurses.... and that is no didrespect to all human nurses) think we as VN's dont have the same standard of education or qualifications... and we obviously dont have to sit exams either..... , and we could not possibly do their jobs !! ye right! they still obviously think I sit on my ass and stroke the pets....

Human Nurses are the public too..... and we need to change the perspective of the public as to what we are capable of doing.... and yes let them know we dont sit on our asses and play with the puppies all day, and we are actuall very well trained and talented.... and could run circles round their asses because we do a helluva lot more than them.
