I was refused as a juror the first time I was called because the defendant said they knew me. I am pretty damn sure I didnt

I've been called for jury duty twice - within the space of two years. First time I was selected for a two week trial which was extended to three weeks. There was some moaning from the vets as if I'd planned it that way! The second time I was pregnant and had a young child so I got out of it as I was primary carer.

yeah it is mandatory but you can defer upto two times. I had to do that, the 1st was when I was in the middle of moving house and the second I was on holiday!

But there is no escaping it, unless you have a criminal record or a learning disability.

Oooh, sounds really posh actually!

I am planning to use the train so knowing that will be reimbursed quickly is great and I will take food knowing that too so thats fab!

you will be fine, they looked after me really well, everyone else is in the same boat so it's nice to chat to different people when there.

Depending on the court (I was at Bradford) they had pool tables, mags and daytime tv on! and I got to go shopping on my way home!!

all expenses are paid really quickly, i was reimbursed for train and loss of earnings within 10 days, They have a voucher scheme where you are given £5 (i think) per day to spend in their canteen, If you dont use it they will give you that money too, so i took a packed lunch everyday, it was a nice little earner!

Pack minimal things into your bag because it will be searched and there was metal detectors like at airports to go through.

Hiya, I did jury service last year and got selected for a 6 week trial, they select about 30 people for the long trials and people who have problems eg work commitments, holidays booked have to show their hands and speak to the judge individually to explain their reasons why, he/she will then decide if the reason is valid

I took a letter from work stating that we are rota'd etc and it would have caused major problems if out of work for so long.

The judge agreed with my reason and | was picked for a 2 week case.

I was petrified before I went but once actually there I really enjoyed it and seeing the whole justice system working.

Be prepared for lots of waiting around so take a good book, you will be frog marched in and out of the court room lots, a good book is a must!!!!

It mentions deferment, but I am not sure if the week before is a bit too late!! Although they did only send me the letter today. Urgh!

hehe i know what you mean, i hate letting people down too, i always feel so guilty! i would love the jury service though, i think it'd be fascinating, get all the court stories from my sister when she goes (she's a police officer so often in court)...oh well nothing you can do apart from be honest with your boss really, try not to worry cause it's pretty much out of your hands!

I doubt it too.

They have sent a letter with all sorts of things like do you have holidays booked or appointments or a job where you cannot be off for that long, but if they can get a locum surely they won't let me use that?

I feel a right pain in the bum. (And am terrified of doing it!! - an interesting and challenging case - I can't decide on my breakfast of a morning!!)

crap, that's a tricky one...

i might be wrong but i don't think you can refuse to do jury service unless there are exceptional circumstances. which i doubt would include your employers being short-staffed...
