There are some vets that appear to wash their hands of a case when there is nothing else that can be done to save a life - for some of these it isnt because they dont care it is because they do care (sometimes too much) and dont want to be there at the end. Some of them see it as a failure on their part. they have the luxury sometimes of getting somebody else to do the deed for them - we dont have that luxury sadly
I think this was more the case than anything else, she was upset and didn't want to - however I had nursed it and felt exactly the same. So frustrating.

And Caro - no need to apologise

Re: Sadness...

Sorry loose track didn't realise you were qualified, hence my ? (have to admit from what is written it does seem this way). If they genuinely couldnt be bothered as horrible as the job is you were probably the best person to do it. At least you would have offered a few friendly words at the end - if the vet couldnt be bothered this probably wouldnt have happened. Its really hard when you have nursed a case sometimes to carry out that last 'treatment' - I know i have been there myself. I used to refuse to pts strays that I had been looking after often for a long time, and then I got round to thinking I would rather it was me doing it because at least I cared rather than let a vet who wasnt really bothered do it .

however saying that ...

dont take it to heart - you did the best you could by the pup and I would imagine most of us at one time or another have had cases like this we can relate to

Yes been in that situation many times. You do the best you can and have to let it be at that. By sound of things it was better he was pts today because he would probably have passed tonight alone.

I am not sure what you feel he did not get. When you are very ill you do not want/need to have something over you all the time. His meds were given, fluids changed and l assume bed. What did you want to do sit cuddling him? that is not doing him any favours nor any other patients who risk having the parvo if not vaccinated.

It is not the length of life but the quality and he had no quality.

The only shocking thing is the vet's attitude and leaving a job like that for someone who is not (unless l am wrong) even in training. And the fact that the owners asked you to do the job and it appears it was not even the vet who asked you as he/she was "to distraught".
I agree with the quality, but he was a very friendly puppy who loved company and was shut alone in a room all day.

I am a qualified RVN, I had to speak to the owners as the vet was in a consult, I MADE her phone them back and she then asked me to do it. I am pretty furious and am going to take that up with the powers that be as I don't feel I should have been made to do that.

Re: Sadness...

Yes been in that situation many times.
