I agree it's brilliant for small spots but for the big spots the Urine Off is your friend!

I have tried using vinegar to get rid of cat urine and it stank the house out even worse so I just ended up airing it out again

Just been to tesco and they have 'rug doctors' that you can lend for the day - for cheap! They have a urine off type thing that removes odours too! amazing- going to do it this weekend :)

If your not sure where he peed, forget the baking soda and wash your whole carpet with water / vinegar.. Got to stress though,, I've not tried this, a client was telling us that she uses this method with her tom cat!

Most professional companies will have a guarantee for their work. I would definitely ask to make a complaint and say something in regards to not being able to use the room and that the cats aren't there or something. Make it up if you have to. Just make sure you get your monies worth!!

shit... um what was the carpet cleaner you used with the hire? Sounds like you need to go over it again but this time instead of water use Urine Off, you can get a large gallon of it from R & L Pet Products. I would first go over the carpet with a cleaner again but this time just with water, be sure you rinse out the container half way through the room. Then pour the Urine Off in the cleaner like it's the water tank with a couple cups of water. Then leave it to dry. Your other option would be to let a professional come and clean it for you with a proper machine.
