a bit of a weak response from the RCVS although more than I expected. Am still going to write personally, because although the RCVS represent us legally, in real life they jst sit on their 'elbows' and let us drown in a deep dark pit

Its quite common to give renal cats subcut fluids when required i do believe.....Sometimes it is the only way to get fluids into a cat i suppose but at the end of the day we dont know the circumstances or the history of this cat either.

The article is ridiculous -why on earth did they not use a practice witha an rcvs listed/reg QVN.Honestly if your gonna do an article to promote something at leats do it properly and RESEARCH!!!

I suppose anything else would have seemed xenophobic and possibly a personal attack.

We also don't know the situation, maybe she has failed her UK Boards and now cannot resit, so cannot practice as a vet here?

No actually, sorry I should have said...it was quite productive, in the sense they pointed me in the right direction for the petition...of which I am working on Basically to get the changes we want, a change in the Act is needed to incorporate VN's and the use of the title.The RCVS are already lobbying for a change in the Act, which can take a couple of years. It was suggested that we incorporate a change in the Act to the petition. I am currently studying legislation.... time allowing with my diploma work too. But I will keep you all posted.I think if the Act is going to be changed at any point, we need to get in on the Act.... pardon the pun

Sooooo....this person is not an RCVS LVN/RVN and not an MRCVS, so is she allowed to do any of the stuff she has been doing??!! Apart from the "cuddling" bits of course?! I'm thinking that this practice might be getting into a bit of trouble with the RCVS??? And as if stating they do their own "in-house" training! These people are living in la-la land, as they don't even seem to appreciated that what they are doing isn't right, infact, they seem proud of their acheivements!

It is so very frustrating that what could have been such a brilliant article was marred by its poor content and inaccurancies. I would also like to querie the £15-25K salary figure! More like £12-18K for qualified. £0-10K for training!

Really? As far as I was aware an LVI just needs to sign the paperwork, anyone can take the bloods. I did on many occasions. I don't see whay this would have to be done by an LVI unless its to check the identichip. I do not like this article. It does nothing to raise the profile of VNs who have trained to nurse. Seems like the practice just wanted someone they could employ cheaply to do more advanced tasks, and yes, I do wonder what else she is doing behind closed doors.

wasn't it in a cat as well? ie something with easy iv access - if it had been a lizard or something - well i wouldn't know where to start! but a cat! IVFT at best, iv bolus thru a catheter at the very least! Not 200mls sub cut - YOWCH!

Oh, and (Sorry Chris), our vet today thought that TST strips were scraps of paper for the bin!

Vets and nurses are different jobs - a human doc wouldn't try to be a human nurse i reckon (as i read earlier)

See that is fine and good! And good on her for taking a nurses pay and hours etc.. I would high five her if the internet would let me

BUT she is not doing articles in the national press, misleading the public about what veterinary nurses actually do, and are trained to do!

Our training (I am an SVN) is different to vets - vets have told me (for example) that they dont get trained in dressings for example - so how could a vet do the job a nurse does?

Do vets know that cats prefer wide low bowls, and that slow blinking chills them out? (for example)

Kudos if they do btw!
