I recently started a new job without a P45, so I'm on emergency tax. On the gov.co.uk website it says it will even out eventually if I stay in the same job, but

Re: Tax back

I've been in a similiar situation to this a couple of times and the tax office has always been really helpful on the phone - definitely worth giving them a ring. One time I didn't have a p45 and was a few payslips short too, but they still got everything sorted easily. Can't comment on the time it will take though, as both times I had left work to go back into education, so had to wait until April because I didn't have a wage coming in for it to be sorted through.

Re: Tax back

it might be worth you getting in touch with the tax office - I spent a long time on emergency tax waiting for a former employer to contact tax office - sometimes its quicker to gee them up a bit

Re: Tax back

I have a P45, but I've been locumming and it was a few months old, so not sure it was up-to-date. I might take that in and ask them to re-assess it. The gov website seemed to imply that you would only have to wait until the next tax year if you moved jobs. Then on your next payslip it will automatically work out how much tax you should have paid for the year to date, and give you a rebate.

I am in a similar position except that I have my P45, and also know I am due a tax rebate as I haven't worked for 5 months.

Your previous employer MUST give you a P45, so chase it and then give it to your new employers.

Without it you will probably stay on emergency code "week1" where there is no "free" pay part, until the end of the tax year.
Do youhave your last payslip? Some companies are happy to use the same taxcode on there instead of an emergency code if you explain the problem.
