I'm an SVN halfway through my (hopefully) final year and my bosses have just told me that they are terminating my training as they can't afford it anymore!
Can they do this?
That is shocking! Childish behaviour! I hope you get things sorted, like others said, take the advice of BVNA then some will happen to sort things out for you. Sounds like you are better off out of there though!

Re: terminating training

I would agree with Sal. (sorry if that sounds harsh it isnt meant to be) People can help you but you have to have to stay positive and do the stuff you need to do to get the help in the first place. One of the students I worked with fractured her leg quite badly a few months before she was due to finish 2nd year and her college emailed her notes to work through at home - your employer has probably already paid in full for this year so your college may be willing to do this.

Definitely get as much portfolio done in the meantime and speak to your assessor to see if she will help with assessor statements etc to help. Practices are more inclined to take on a nearly QVN if the portfolio is finished so this would definitely be in your favour.

You're so close to finishing that really your employers aren't doing themselves any good by letting you go now, though hopefully you wouldn't have too much trouble finding another position because of how far on with training you are. I do hope you get to speak to someone helpful at BVNA legal helpline/Citizens Advice and find out your rights.

Keep us updated.

Re: terminating training

Thanks for all of your replies guys!

The business is struggling but they will need to get another nurse in if I leave so I don't believe it's purely financial; I have had issues with the senior vet/ owner and his wife is the practice manager and I believe this is there way of getting rid of me as they can't actually sack me.

Most of my training already paid for by them so they're losing out by getting rid of me now, only have a few months to go as hoping to take written exam in July and practicals in September. I'm really not in a position to pat for my own exams. My assessor is actually on maternity leave but comes in to assess me. I'm the only student left.

BVNA seemed to think my bosses couldn't do this but now seem to be offering little advice.

Will get in touch with Citizen's Advice but opening hours rather limited and I have to be at work still.

I'm just so furious that they can do this to me and I'm not prepared to take it lying down. Even if I find another TP who can take me on I might miss out on taking exams when planned and qualifying much later!!!

ask your college about the apprentership scheme, i was on this last year and the government fund your training, i got one free text book too, it was done thru my college,

[/quote]

depends on your age, and on each local authority!
I had a trainee position but the day before I was due to attend college the practice said they couldn't pay my fees. College wanted £820 in the next week so I could start. No grants available in this area, no bursaries due to being over 25, local authority no money to pay for college places, student has to pay for further education. We tried every route possible to avoid having to pay.
So I couldn't start college.
Then practice had to let two vets go........then me.......
end of chance to train......bye bye vet nursing.....no-one wants oldies, no-one wants trainees in Kent (except 2nd years, and even 1st year adverts they mean nearly 2nd year so someone else has paid for the first year and done their portfolio etc).....
in fact even places outside of Kent they don't want non-locals to work for them (even though all my interviews have been outside Kent in the past).
demoralised after 3 1/2 years of trying, don't see the new rules helping in my situation (where's the raft of places advertising for 1st years or saying they are now TP's or ATP's?) and so off to the NHS in order to be able to keep a roof over my head.

You need to work out what costs a new practice will need to spend to employ you, what work you still need towards portfolio and exams. Presumably you are still able to work there, so I don't quite understand if all fees have been paid why they can no longer train you unless the assessor has left?
Good luck, the profession desperately needs qualified staff, and as you're so nearly there it would be a shame if you had to delay.

Re: terminating training

sorry, i put that up twice, too much vino!!!!

Re: terminating training

ask your college about the apprentership scheme, i was on this last year and the government fund your training, i got one free text book too, it was done thru my college,

Re: terminating training

ask your college about the apprentiship scheme, i was on this last year and the government paid for all my training, it was done thru my college provider.

Re: terminating training

In addition speak to your college so that if worse came to worse you may be able to follow up on any work you may miss.
