I have 2 males rats, approximately 15 weeks old - I've noticed one keeps getting what looks like blood stained whiskers, but only at the base where the whisker meets the skin.
It's a rusty red colour so can't think what else it would be

Re: Bloody whiskers on male rat?

It's this...

I had rats for years... well daughter did, and knew about this condition. We used to use ripped up newspaper all the time... nice and soft. Dont use shredded paper though this can actually act as a tournique and sever a limb.

My rats lived to average age 3, and I fed them senior dry dog food... the prot was equivelent to what a rat requires. They dod get other treats like ....polo mints.. they loved them!

Re: Bloody whiskers on male rat?
Stay Fresh Bedding
Occasional low levels of porphyrin staining are normal, but regular large amounts of porphyrin indicate stress, sickness, or poor diet

Re: Bloody whiskers on male rat?

are they kept on sawdust? that makes it happen sometimes

Re: Bloody whiskers on male rat?

usually a sign of stress/illness

Re: Bloody whiskers on male rat?

My rat used to get this to.

Re: Bloody whiskers on male rat?

Yes rats can get increased porphyrin secretion (Chromodacryorrhoea) from the Harderian gland which produces a red ring around the eye and it can be seen around the nose as it flows down the nasolacrimal duct. This is characteristic of stress in rats.
