Sal, yes I wholeheartedly agree with you, I qualified in 2004 so was automatically put on the list, however was assessed and trained by amazing nurses who some now are been made to feel less of a nurse after 'opting out' of the R bit.

Oh, and the crazy part is, dare I say an 'old school' vet can act as a mentor, with no regular observed assessments by IV's, this give me images of all sorts of problems! Not that im dissing such vets at all but they are a breed of their own after working with many!

Nothing for sure yet though it was mentioned that VNs must be 'suitably experienced' so in which case I'd imagine at least a year (as this is the length of time to be qualified before doing the A1 cert).

Re: assessing

Does anyone know if you will have to be qualified/registered for a minimum length of time before becoming a mentor?

Re: assessing

IV at college said that only RVN's will be able to be mentors. Anyone who has A1 will only have to do a short course to go through the syllabus changes but anyone who doesn't have A1 will have to go on a course to become a mentor so they know what to do. It'll all be on line with the mentor writing a 'diary' type thing to show competency of the student. Also college said they wouldn't know exactly what's what with the new course until at least August!! The congress was planned then the day before RCVS decide to announce plan changes. From what I gather there will be no assessors as such just mentors, the training will be less formal and no qualification will be needed. The NVQ no longer exist and has been replaced with another qualification so they have decided to implement the changes now. If anyone knows what going on tho would love to hear from you cos nobody seems to know whats going on!!! I really wish they'd get there *** in gear.

Some colleges are still doing the A1 award because the NVQ will run to 2013 I think so it;s something you may still be able to do,

With the teaching aspect, many Animal care courses have a NVQ element so if you obtained the A1 award you would still be able to use it for this if you eventually go into teaching.

Hope this helps a little.
