Well, I am currently 7 months further down the line from the same decision, and I have to say, I am much happier, although it can be nerve wracking at times as I have a mortgage to pay and a wedding looming up rather fast!! But all in all, I am glad I made the decision to leave before it drove me mad and made me hate my job.

I have had 3 locums so far and not really struggled finding a placement, although I have been happy to travel a fair amount. Still on the lookout for a permanant practice that I will fall in love with, but I'm happy to wait to make sure I find somewhere local that I can settle and feel an integral part of.

I'm sure you will come to the decision that you feel comfortable with, just don't be scared of pushing your boundaries! Good Luck!

I wouldn't leave my current employer in the lurch. I am grateful for the experience they have given me and I will be sad to leave as I have made some great friends. I am in fact dreading handing in my notice as I know my boss will take it personally.

I'm going to spend this weekend sorting out my cv and getting it sent out to local practices and see what happens.

I'm actually in this situation at the moment - finish at current practice tomorrow and currently have no job to go to. But i'm licky as i'm moving in with my parents and can afford to take a couple of months to find the right practice. And the mai reason i'm leaving my current job is to be closer to home - currently in Surrey, parents in Lancashire! There is locum work out there providing you don't mind going slightly outside your area!

LOL - that was a bit stupid of the locum wasn't it??? But I would have done exactly the same as you if I was in your position - unless the locum had a damn good reason for doing so. I think people are too quick to shaft their employers and it can only come back and bite them on the bum later. Respect goes both ways - but if you don't like your practice I still think, where possible, hold your head high and work your notice so that, whatever you think, no one can fault your your conduct in the workplace (unless of course staying would mean ending up on a murder charge for killing the boss/PM/etc etc etc).

True. Plus, you can always say to your new employers that you have this notice period and am not prepared to 'dump' your previous employers in it by not working this notice period as you don't think that's ethical, etc.

I'd rather wait and employ a nurse that treated her employers well then not wait and get one that didn't. I think you can alot about a prospective employee by the consideration they give the current employer

I agree and even if you did find locum work it's not guaranteed to last until you find a position

Was just going to say much the same as Gillian - if a practice really wants you, a few extra weeks won't stop them from making an offer. I have to give 4wks where I am but have told my interviewers that I can't start for 6wks as am relocating and need two weeks to get settled, get my head straight and get Henri settled into his new home/routine as well - it doesn't seem to have caused a problem anywhere so far and that's not even because I'm legally bound elsewhere for 2wks of it!

I've had to give 2 months notice where I am currently!!! I was offered the job back in October and have still not started work!!! roll on the 15h.

Most prospective employers will be fine about it I'm sure

Well I was initially thinking about locuming but don't really want to be away from home to much. There is quite a lot of locum work nearby and so I know I could fall back on this. I'm just worried that I may miss a job opportunity because of me having such a long notice period.

wait until you get a confirmed offer - unless you can afford not to be working for a while.......

They may not want to hold you to the 8 weeks notice, and maybe you have some holiday you can use towards that 8 weeks if you do have to work it all.

Personally I'd hand it in now and at least have the option of locum work if nothing came about the other jobs, especially seeing as you have to give 8 weeks ! I handed my notice into my last permanent practice without having a job to go to and it gave me the kick up the bum I needed to move on from somewhere I wasn't overly happy in, otherwise I'd have stayed there forever just out of comfort.

Hope you manage to get something sorted, I doubt you'd be pushed to find locum work if you needed it though. Good Luck!
