see how it goes when you're in practice though. i'd love to work a few more hours to get some extra cash in, on a week without on-calls/weekends it seems doable, but then you get one of them crazy weeks....you might be lucky though and get a practice that doesn't do it's own out of hours, no on-calls or weekends and doesn't make you work before going to college on college day!!

Thanks. A part time job was only an idea as I know its going to be hard work but worth it. Now I just need to find a practice in/near Bristol :-)

Me too, but I am looking for a placement to start my training and am not sure what sort of salary I can expect while I'm at the practice - any advice/suggestions?

Do others have part time jobs while they train?

I'm currently in the same situation as been applying for jobs 120 miles away and it's difficult getting time off from my current job, have to book (aka waste if it's unsuitable!) a day's leave which understandably you don't want to do for a job which you wouldn't apply for if you'd known the salary was rubbish. I've started being pretty forthright and usually email to ask a couple of questions about rota, number of vets/nurses etc so it doesn't look like money is my only concern but my final question is always please can you give me an idea of expected salary scale on the basis that I don't want to waste their time and I will be travelling a long distance for an interview. So far they've all been great and have come back with an answer/scale but to be honest, if somone wasn't willing to at least give me a ball park figure, I'd probably steer clear. To make it more positive and get their interest, I usually start with a short paragraph about being extremely interested, how long I've been qualified, other relevant experience etc and close with a sentence along the lines of once I've received your reply I will forward my formal application and full cv. Has worked for me so far!

I would just explain that you will be travelling such a long distance for interviews and that you need to know as much information about the job including salary , before you make the journey, as you don't want to waste theirs and your time... just be upfront.... there is a post about job adverts and not detailing salaries in them, from a while back.

To be honest, if a practice can't be upfront about what salary they are offering, or they take it in the wrong way, then do you want to work for them? I think it's a reasonable request.
