That sounds familiar!!! You didn't get told that in a practice in Newport South Wales did you??!!

I think dilution rates and contact times are very important. We have syringes ties to all of our products so that they can be measured out quickly and easily. Contact time is often more of a problem due to getting caught up in something else, but it is still important. All training practices should be teaching this so students understand....slightly concerning if they're not!!

I am also quite particular about dilution rates and contact times - haven't heard 'dilution is the solution to pollution' before - shall probably start quoting it at work now LOL!

both of the trainees after me went to Telford - I was the first trainee to not be taught in house where I worked, the guinea pig if you like, and I went to Myerscough which I found was also very good

yes! Jimmy Simpson via one of his colleagues tho did hear it directly from him a few years later at a course he taught

I don't think most nurses are blase about this actually, anyone how has had some sort of training surely knows why dilution rates and contact times are there! In many practices I've worked at there has been some chart or at least dilution rates (in mls) on the bottle/bucket for different cleaning types along with a syringe so no excuse for incorrect measurements.

It definitely helps to have everyone singing from the same song sheet though and although it can seem a bit picky having charts everywhere, it should reduce any confusion especially for new trainees.

I have an informal system whereby when I've sprayed the kennel out with Trigene (all our Trigene is at the correct dilution as we have posters where the main bottle is so no-one has an excuse when they make up the spray bottles/mop buckets etc!), I leave the spray bottle sat inside the front of the kennel so everyone knows it's been sprayed out. However, invariably when I come back to wipe it down etc, someone has already done it so they probably just think I only half do the job and then walk off!

I'm also conscious of contact times with Hibi etc but don't know whether everyone in the practice is or not as I'm never in theatre with anyone else so don't see what they do.

I was taught the dilution is the solution to pollution!!! always follw the letter of the law when it comes to dilution - depending on the size of the team contact times can be difficult unless you leave labels eveerywhere - would always do this after a critical case though...

I'm quite good with dilution rates and mostly stick to what it says on the 'tin'.

I have seen misuse over the years especially at one practice where they had an outbreak of a particularly nasty strain of KC. Ended up contacting the company of the disinfectant which we used at the time and they said as we had not been adhering to the set dilution rates the KC had become resistant to the disinfectant. Got told to swap over to another disinfectant to kill off the bugs and then go back to original disinfectant and use it at the CORRECT dosage after 2 weeks.
