Go for it though mouths were made for asking so first:

Ask yourself what you would like and then ask your boss what he would like and see if you have some middle ground

Agree with what everyone else has said.... although I've only taken 14 days last year.... will be taking the rest this year tho.... can understand what you are saying......

try asking him straight out if thats what you want to do - you need the money and he needs a nurse ( either the one he already has or somebody to cover )

sounds a reasonable boss - so wouldnt imagine he would mind you asking

Thats not really your problem though and you should not be made to feel guilty about having time off when you are perfectly entitled too it! can I ask does your boss take his holidays? I agree with kate too it' not your place to find a locum... thats your bosses job.

As you can see by that thread. he is a pretty good boss, which is proberly why I feel bad about this.

I am the only qualified nurse in the practice apart from 3 receptionist. If I take a day off they cover me but I cancell ops. He would get them to do the G/A if im not there, saying he would be watching it also. But I would prefer that does not happen.

I know i should just go in and say right Im taking three weeks holiday next month, but?

I really want to know how to ask if he could maybe buy back a couple of weeks. Could do with the money!

Agree with Kate and ST - holidays are for you to decide what you want to do with them whether you stay and home and do nothing or go away, you're entitled to them!

Any practice owner worth their salt would expect you to take them, and they'd arrange the locum as well, that's not your responsibility! You're being taken advantage of...what you do with your annual leave is your business, no-one elses - if you choose to have a duvet day you're perfectly within your rights!

Due to lots of family problems I did Not know I would not be able to take all my holidays this year. In the past I have used them and aslo taken unpaid days for school holidays.

Ok I know I should take the time but as an owner of a practice would you want me to take time off knowing I was at home? Then also having a locum in who would be new to the practice?

Do remember that at most practices we have to pay for an extra member of staff in order to cover for the others when off on holiday/sick. You can't just employ one nurse, even if you only need one most of the time, because you need a 'spare'. If your boss is managing with the bare minimum staffing levels then, speaking annually, he'll be saving money, whatever it costs for your locum cover. He/she will be aware of that so DO NOT worry about taking, or asking to be paid for, your holidays. I would say, though, that if you had a good idea you wouldn't be taking your holidays you should have probably discussed it with him/her last year....as you are not automatically entitled to carry holiday time he could turn round and say tough. If he'd said that last year you would still have had a chance to take your holidays!

yep- thats what i usally do. unfortunatly most of them seem to then have gone into full time practice or refer me back to their locum agency. My boss has had to put them in B+B in the past but with agency fees as well the result is awfully expensive. And yes then I feel really bad.

Could you contact previous locums who have worked for you to see if/when they're free so you know you have some cover? Or see if you could negotiate with your boss to put the locum up in a b+b or something if you were only off for a week or so if it makes it easier to get someone in?

Thanks for all your comments - but that does answer my question!

I now have a husband who is at home and has become OCD re cleaning, so do not want to spend time at home at momment. Also have a 18yr old who is a pain! Plus a 14yr son who requires constant help to get through his school work, so cant just take off and leave.

I really do enjoy my work and its always left up to me to get a locum (which without accomadation is hard) SO .........................

I havnt got round to taking many breaks. Yes I know you all think Im mad. But there it is. Too late to do much about it at present.

BUT yes I am knackered!!!!

Wasn't sure if that was what you're meaning, but if so then I agree with the others! There your holidays to take! Your boss would have to find a locum anyway and that's up to them to sort out, you're entitled to holidays so don't feel guilty (< wanted a wagging finger smiley but there isn't one so have this instead
