It amazes me that some owners still let their dogs bounce over to us out of control and one lady lets her JRT's run over barking at us My dogs are so good with little dogs and amazingly if they get snapped at by other dogs they will just lift their heads out of the way and move on, but i'm sure if i left my dogs to do whatever they wanted there would be complaints due to size and breed!

A vet i used to work with had one of our other nurses to walk her 2 rotties. One day when rotties were on lead a yorkie, off lead, flew across the road and went for the rotties and one of them retaliated(not sure i blame her really) and grabbed the yorkie and caused some bite wounds. It was taken to the other vets in the area and needed antibiotics and painrelief........ it took lots of explaining to the owner that it was HIS dog that wasn't under control and that it wouldn't have been bitten if he had it under control/on a lead and the fact that it could also have been run over when it ran across the road! The vet paid half of the bill as good will but a crazy situation! The rotties live with a couple of small dogs (JRT and a tiny chihuahua x yorkie) so are well used to littles ones

Not sure what more we can do as big dog/bull terrier owners

Re: I love SBTs but...

[quote user="Kate Claxton"]

It's very true what you say about people overreacting and needing to accept consequences if they're going to let their dog run up to others who are on the lead. I always make sure i keep Jack under control and away from little dogs like your pup, cos like you say a big dog playing in a boisterous way is not nice for them, and could do harm without meaning to!

Re: I love SBTs but...

I feel for you Vicky - you have done all you can by keeping your dog on a lead and yet others just let their dogs run free - meaning that they can approach your dog without your say so. Whether Jack is aggressive or not I feel people should take responsibility for their own dogs - meaning that if they allow their dog to run up to others willy nilly with no supervision they must accept the consequences.

This is something I am quickly learning - I own a 3kg shih tzu x puppy and the other morning when I was walking two MUCH bigger dogs (it's not hard!) came tanking down the path behind us at full speed - with no owner in sight. It turned out these dogs were not aggressive but were far too boistrous for Dora, knocking her down and pushing her around on the ground. I was keeping my dog safely on a lead but not everyone else does - these two were not even in sight of their owner.

Dora is starting to get a bit cheeky now and the other day when she approached a terrier she got too enthusiastic and jumped at his face. The terrier, quite rightly did the same back at her but because he was so much bigger he knocked her down. She was fine but boy did she squeal!! I just said, well serves you right for being rude. I did not start on the terrier's owner for letting her dog attack mine! Dogs have their own way of sorting things out and unfortunately sometimes people overreact.

I can understand that people may have preconceptions (as my little puppy does look a bit like a rabbit I have to admit I am wary of greyhounds!) but such assumptions are a real shame. Sorry it ruined your walk - try to forget about it and continue to walk Jack in the way you wouldl ike others to walk their dogs.

Re: I love SBTs but...

Grrrrrrr i'm SO mad, i f**king HATE people being so bloody well biased against Jack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was walking in forest with my dad, my friend, friends mum, her springer and her nans little old poodle. Other people around with their dogs. Lots of dogs throughout the walk run up to see our dogs, have a sniff then run away again. I keep Jack on lead AT ALL TIMES. Under control. He makes friends with the dogs coming to see him. Then a cocker comes running up and pesters Jack. Jack jumps at it, like he does sometimes in a playful way, i pull him away when he does it to stop him squashing smaller dogs with his weight! Cocker is a right wimp and SCREAMS the place down and runs back to it's owner. I call to owner is her dog ok, she is rude and says 'obviously not'. Then people from the other side of the path say that Jack had the cocker around the neck!!! There is NO WAY that happened, if Jack had got it round the neck there would be bloodshed FFS!!! My friends mum is sure that the other dog was provoking Jack. Would i really be walking my dog with other dogs if it was going to attack?! We started walking away when we knew there was nothing wrong with the other dog, then i heard the people from across the path call to the others to see if their dog was ok. I saw red at this point and yelled back "just cos he's a staffie your biased!"!!!! God i'm soooooooo wound up! They're going to go around telling people there is an aggressive staffie, sod the fact that their dog is running up to dogs who are on leads taunting them and screams blue murder over nothing!!!!!!!!! I cannot 100% trust Jack with other dogs off lead, hence me keeping him on lead where i'm under control!
