So have to say since that day have still not gone to a doctors, that was 3 years ago lol!!

That is very interesting, i didn't know that! When i was at school (prob about 8-9 years ago) i badly sprained my ankle by managing to stand on a hockey ball in a pe lesson (still to this day don't quite know how i managed it!). The outside of my ankle swelled like a balloon and if i tried to weight bear i collapsed. Went to a & e, xray showed no damage so given crutches and told to rest it. They said it would probably take longer to heal properly than if i'd fractured it. Was on crutches for weeks. For years after i would frequently twist the ankle, and like you say, i assumed it was a weakness! It doesn't happen anymore thankfully.

Re: Physiotherapy (for us, not the animals lol!!)

One of B's team members is a physio. We have been trying to get together so she can check my ankle for some time. l need to do exercise and get it sorted as still lots of pain. Finally she managed to have a look today. I have a list of exercises to do and if strength is not back within 8-10 weeks then she is going to do me a letter for my idiot dr and see l get sent for scans to look for ruptures

Did not do much with excercises she was just checking movement and showing me how to do exercises but by time l finished my leg/ankle knew l had been working them. What surprised me was how simple the excersises are, just bend and stretch.

Re: Physiotherapy (for us, not the animals lol!!)

Hey Donna & Vicky,

It went brilliant thank you - much better than I thought!

Once the paperwork was out of the way, which only really took 10mins, the rest was very 'hands on'. My physio reckons approx 70% of my neck/spine fully functional, which was surprisingly good as I told him that I feel 80 years old some days!

He done all these manipulating and stretching exercises, which were painful, but felt better afterwards.

Had to lie on my front on the bench and he manipulated (if thats the word) every space between my vertebrae from my cervical right down to my lumbar. I was quite stiff and sore for a few hours afterwards, then towards the evening I felt such relief!! AND yesterday, I was properly able to bend down to pick up a dog!!

I am going back next week and I cannot wait!!

Thanks everybody for your input - it was a tremendous help!

Re: Physiotherapy (for us, not the animals lol!!)

Has anyone else tried Cranial Osteopathy? They give you about 40 min warming uup of the muscles etc, then they massage and use ultrasound massage too, finishing off with more heat using heat and stimulation pads. whole process takes about 2 hours.

Normally you are a bit sore the following day, but after that the amount of free movement is amazing. I have a rotator cuff injury that comes and goes, sometimes I cant even put on my own clothes if it is really bad, but these sessions leave me pain free for months, or until I do something silly like tensing up when holding a dog.

Claire, I cant believe they had you filling in forms!!! and never even touched you to find out where your injury was, they have to manipulate and do certain movements to find the cause of the pain!!

Re: Physiotherapy (for us, not the animals lol!!)

i've always wanted to try chiropractic, had shoulder pain for years from an old riding accident and just general wear/tear on the back that comes from years of yard work...seriously looking into it now....

Re: Physiotherapy (for us, not the animals lol!!)

SaskiaVN, how have you got on today?

I agree,it's not a competition to lift the heaviest, just ask for help! wish I had done that 10 years ago!

it got to the point last year I had to seriously consider leaving the profession because of the pain each day. It got to the point where I got home and literally had to crawl up my stairs because I couldnt straighten up once I had sat down, but my chiropractor certainly keeps the muscles relaxed.

I was on codeine (which im now off thankfully) and they trialed gabapentin to help relieve the nerves I think but It didnt agree with me and didnt even know what day it was etc so had to come off it.

Now just on diclofenac on bad days,

I find going to the gym and using a gym ball has helped too, it helps build up the core muscles and when I cant get to the gym I can do the exercises at home now, the physio may give you exercises using a ball.

im banned from lifting heavy dogs and also banned from any large animal work, which been a farmers daughter I miss dearly and get very upset about but putting into perspective my health is more important, I just have to keep telling myself this!

It is something I put up with for a number of years and probably stems from lifting stupid weights on my own in my younger nursing days! the poor students get such a telling off when I see them lifting heavy dogs etc on their own!

im lucky i work in a very understanding practice with people around who always help me out when needed

Keep us posted and look after yourself

I cannot even bend my knees 'properly' to lift a heavy dog!

I decided to visit a chiropractor instead and what he does is AMAZING!

I started off seeing him twice a week initially and 18 months later im down to once every 3 weeks.

He can pinpoint the pain and also feels the tight areas, im usually more sore for a few hours after my appt but then relatively relaxed and painfree for about 7-10 days now and pretty much off the painkillers unless I have had a really busy day.

The problem with me is that I 'guard' myself which subsequently leads to shoulder and neck pain.

A chiropractor isnt a cheap option, I pay £40 a session but as long as it works and keeps me nursing then I will carry on paying it.

Oh and yes, my chiropracter has seen me in my underwear more times than my ex!!!!

hope all goes well and you get sorted
