This is my first post so here goes...
In my practice there has been a mini debate on worming. I was just wondering how regularly should we advise clients to worm against tapeworms?
I thought (if using advocate as flea tx) it should be

Re: Tapeworms

I actually forgot to mention that we do this simply as we have seen many suspected and a few confirmed cases of lungworm in dogs and we are in central london. Our vet perfers this as preventative treatment. With our cats most are on stronghold or frontline depending on which they perfer.

As to giving products seperately i think if theres any chance to possibly reduce the chances of an unwanted reaction then we will do that. Buut i completely agree with previous posts.....reps will say anything in a pitch to get a sale!

Re: Tapeworms

have to agree with a previous poster - beware of anecdotal evidence passed on by reps. I recall one congress where the Bayer reps were telling delegates about the dangers of frontline spot on and frontline spray - there was nothing printed in the literature they were supplying at the time because presumably that would have ended up in court- just verbal warnings to delegates. Capstar and Program were receiving a similar dissing for other reasons - but nothing in print. It wasnt only one rep doing this so I guess the information had been passed around from higher up. Unless its backed up in writing of a reputable source dont take it as gospel. And just so I cannot be accused of bias there are reps from other companies pushing other products who are doing exactly the same

Re: Tapeworms
Heres the tricky bit.....if you use advocate first you must wait a month before giving the milbermax.

Sometimes I find all the choice quite mind boggling!

Re: Tapeworms
We were told by Bayer that becaus the products are similar in the active ingredients that you should not use Advocate and Milbermax at the same time.

We do however recommend Milbermax monthly and advocate up until 6 months of age then the advocate montly and milbermax every three to four months, sooner if required.

Heres the tricky bit.....if you use advocate first you must wait a month before giving the milbermax. If you give the milbermax first then you only need to wait a week before applying advocate.

This was the advice given to us but to be honest if owners find that too difficult to follow then to just give advocate and drontal reguarly.
I've yet to see any actual literature regarding the matter with Advocate and Milbemax and it's only the reps from Bayer recommending this, I mean why wouldn't they recommend you use only their products and not the competition?

I use Stronghold and Advocate in rotation with my cats and i usually will wait a week or two after administration of the Advocate to give the Milbemax for two reasons; A. common sense as they are the same drug. B. because I would like the Advocate/Stronghold flea treatment to begin working before I worm so that they are less likely to reinfect themselves so quickly via ingestion of fleas once treated.

I've done this now for 4 years and have never had a problem.

Advocate recommends 30 days between admin on the website...

Re: Tapeworms

We were told by Bayer that becaus the products are similar in the active ingredients that you should not use Advocate and Milbermax at the same time.
