I've passed my VN exams a couple of years ago but have only just registered and become an RVN. I was just wondering what services etc are available to RVNs re legal assistance / backup if they ever needed it. It is VERY unlikely that the RVN DC process will be activated until VDS has completed the arrangements to extend the cover for RVNs to include these legal costs. I cannot give a definite time scale, but I would expect this to go "live" in 2011, best wishes, Jill

Re: Equivalent of VDS for RVNs

Has the Register been fully enforced yet?
Dear David McKeowen,

Further to our conversation a few moments ago, I am writing to summarise the outcome of our conversation and to supply you with the relevant contact details of the human resources person at XXX.
To summarise our conversation:

I contacted you today to check that I was still covered as a self-employed locum vet nurse under the practice that I am locumming at's VDS cover (this had been my previous understanding as I contacted yourselves in 2007/8 after the introduction of the register). You have confirmed that the VDS cover supplied to veterinary practices makes no distinction between employed/self-employed/volunteer laystaff/vet nurses and that, I, as a vet nurse, am automatically covered by the practice's VDS cover whilst locumming at that practice. You asked for the contact details of the relevant person at XXX to clarify the policy cover with and I said that I would email you with this information.

Abbreviated copy of email correspondence with the VDS which summarised our conversation.

Yes - I can answer this for definite having spoken to the VDS about this a few months ago. I had it confirmed in writing too.

All VNs (irrespective of employment status) are covered by VDS while they are working in vet practice that has VDS cover. If you use your VN qualification outside of a vet practice that has VDS cover though you need your own professional indemnity insurance.

Re: Equivalent of VDS for RVNs

My boss is on the board of VDS and am sure they are covered under them will check with him tomorrow

Re: Equivalent of VDS for RVNs

I do not know if they ever sorted anything out for nurses, there was talk of discussion with vds but nothing as far as l know was ever said about the outcome..if any.
