You have to get all your grey areas on 5 out of 8 tasks and then the percentage is worked out

But how can that be right .....surely if the student passed the grey area for the set tasks then that would a pass ... but at the same time then if they missed some of the key steps then they would have a lower pass?!

Think we need an examiner on here to clarify things cos things are just not adding up!

I think there can be some differentiating between examiners/centres so the marking for one person can be quite a bit different to the next from another centre. The grey areas do indicate health and safety and/or safe practice to the patient as this is what the practicals are there to demonstrate so if these have been missed from your marking sheets, get your assessors or others in the practice to assess you on these areas.

I know it can often seem vague as to what the examiners wanted from you when you have failed a task but keep going because you'll get there.

and the post befor-- forgetting to put the wedge under the sternum, should have been a fail, it states all necessary equipment should be used, my first attempt i failed rads cos i missed the wedge under sternum!!!!!!!

am just waiting to see what my options are , before i make any decisions, im scared of regretting it later but still unhappy to make a desicion, and hate to rant on but i got 100% on all of them but missed on the grey areas!! one task i know was my eror i forgot to cover the end of a sharp instrument before autoclaving, if id remembered this i would have passed, seems so trivial really. especially when i do this task numerous times a day, hey ho!!!

to add to that i passed 4 tasks with grey areas but I have no idea why I havent got the 5th in order to pass but i get my feedback sheets soon

Exactly finn and i dont mean to sound horrible and i am glad for people that have passed but surely if they made mistakes they say they did should they have passed?!?I want to know why obviously some examiners are harder than others. This is why im bitter too love but not too bitter enough to give up (yet). I got 90 to 100% marks in most of my pracs so why didnt i get a grey area?!?!?i dont understand your either competant or your not and dont get me wrong some of the grey areas make sense eg with calculations but its still very inconsistent marking. chin up xx

i agree too, i tried so hard to remember where i went wrong 1st time round i was red hot on my radiography and so sure i did everything right, had 3 mins left to double check everything but still failed that one, i am bitter cos my first attempt at practicals we appealed to rcvs, a lot of discrepancies in the marking, i,e my fail letter had said id failed on one and when i got my mark sheet they had passed me, a few other things didnt add up either we appealed with the backing of my boss who after carefully went thru this agreed it was their mistakes, i appealed immediately and sent this recorded delivery, they recievd this all very quickly, only for a letter to arrive back from the rcvs saying unfortunately it couldnt be put to the board as my appeal didnt reach them in time!!! i sent it 2 months before the board was to sit!!!!! so what was the point, you will never win.and to hear people are passing when they know they made mistakes makes it all the more unfair.

I have to agree with you claire as its far from fair because to me, this may sound wrong and this is not to be horrible to the people that have passed because you deserve it but are the RCVS putting less people through and tweeking the marks to make the exams seem more 'harder' thus thats why the pass rate is so high ?!?!? There are loads of dedicated and highly experienced nurses out there who are worthy of the qualification (id like to think i am) and who just arent getting through and its ridiculous! On my radiography task I thought i was fine and yet I wasnt. I have no idea and cannot pinpoint why i failed that task to be honest. Lets all find the motivation and nail the sod because we all want it so bad and we are capable, we are!!xx

From what I was aware, the gown and gloves are both sterile. It is your hands that are not sterile.

Gloves touching the gown is not a fail step.

I can't believe I passed- I know I messed up my bandaging (didn't even turn the dog over so the injured leg was uppermost and didn't take my bandage high enough) and in my xray (lateral cystogram) forgot the wedge under the sternum and the word 'ischium' didn't exist that day. Closed gloving was awful- maybe the examiner missed the fingers of the glove flapping against the arm of the gown?!?!?

hi finnigan, i passed 4 out of the 8, and again it looks like its due to the odd bloody grey areas,the marks r so high too!!i am going to try again because everyone at work has been really nice and told me iv just got to and that i am more than capable and worthy of being a qualified nurse. Luckily this will be classed as my 2nd attempt. Technically it will be my 3rd time when i resit tho because they apparently messed up at brackenhurst and i got a freebie because of it. Im not entirely sure why i failed but im getting my feedback sheets soon and im guessing its the grey areas which is frankly a load of shite i think!!I tell u something ,it definately doesnt always reflect how good a nurse in practice you are and bet ur fantastic-its always the case. Its really boosted my confidence because my colleagues (more friends really) have been so nice. Reconsider hun, just think of the outcome, thats what encourages me to do it again.xx

sam i know how you feel, ive just failed my theory and my practicals this was my 2nd attempt at practicals, ive just cancelled the cheque to re sit, ive had enough too it seems they want blood, y do we have to prove that we can set up a bloody drip, put together a circuit, when were doing it every day of the bloody week, i keep getting so close but just miss the post!! got 100% in practical marks, but stupidly missed the odd grey area, feel this is unjust, they are going to start losing some good nurses and there will be less of us soon to go round!!!

Well done! Been feeling rubbish all day, but had a nice call from my college tutor and got some lovely flowers from the girls at work. Going for re-sits in March even though got to travel down from Scotland but I NEED to pass!

To all of those who failed do not give up - this was my second attempt. I felt like crap after I failed last time and was sure I would never be able to do it - but I have. And trust me, if I can do it - anyone can!

I just knew it this morning when I didnt get my letter and then my name isnt on the list so im not even going to look at the letter when it comes. It so so disheartening and I really do try to be the best that I can and I really dont think I did bad in my practicals and thought that I could have actually have done it so what confidence does that give me for next time??So no more for me no way this is it and Iv had it

Don't give up. I know lots of people who passed at the 3rd attempt. Strange they want to up the number of nurses training when it seems there are a lot of good, dedicated ones that can't make it through their practical exam. Something is flawed and seems in most cases its not the SVN.
