I'm using the information sent by fortekor... I've added the websites they have commissioned... www.heartydog.co.uk and www.felinegood.co.uk but nowhere on the display is there any mention of any drugs! Because we use lots of different heart drugs - it really would just depend on the vet treating the animal!

Me too, Definitely agree with Caro, provide reliable websites for info so that if they are insistant on further research/reading they can have some trusted sites

I've just done an info leaflet for new rabbit owners- i've mentioned flystrike and tried to emphasise the importance of getting the rabbit seen asap by saying :

Once a rabbit is infested every hour is essential in order to give them the best chance of recovery.

and in the handling section i've put:

If the bottom is not supported, a frightened rabbit can kick its hind legs backwards, causing serious injury.

rather than if your rabbit kicks out it will break its back and have to be euthanased

Bearing in mind people's capacity to absorb a message (very limited), you DO need to inform pet owners using quite punchy, hard-hitting facts.

But it is all about context. If the information appears to have no ulterior motive, I will be MUCH more likely to accept it than if the purpose is obviously to sell me stuff.

i.e. "9/10 Cavalier King Charles over the age of ten will have some degree of heart failure, these are the signs to look for" is something I will read and digest and act on (and you can be sure that if I see any of the signs, I will discuss with vet without further prompting).

"9/10 Cavalier King Charles over the age of ten will have some degree of heart failure, discuss new Fortmedin with us" is something that is more likely to make me think: 'they are just trying to frighten me into buying the product'.

The more targeted your message, the more effective it will be (i.e. all things being equal you can expect anyone with a CKC to be interested in the above, where the same may not be true if you just say 9/10 dogs).

So in summary, I'd recommend that you keep treatment information to a minimum on the board, and make it ALL about the condition. No need even to say 'talk to us'. People will.

There has been more than one occasion when I've told the owner that they're killing their animal by the way its being treated, either diet or lack of meds. There is no point beating around the bush!

I completely agree... I think people should be told the truth and nothing about CKD or heart failure - or any disease should be sugar coated and people told: "oh don't worry I'm sure Jess hasn't got heart failure"... when the likelyhood of a 9 year old CKCS with breathing difficulties DOES POSSIBLY (I'm not allowed to diagnose LOL)... have heart failure!

No sugar coating clients! Lets tell them a spade is a spade!

Nope, is the short answer to monitoring what they see- sometimes that little bit extra scare factor can urge them to do something about it. As for heart disease, I haven't ever done display but would probably be blunt as I nomally am. Its better to get the information from you rather than the internet.
