I am now a single mother on my own with my 2 young sons, although I have my dad and my brother in law to ask about things, but, that said, I think a little improvement in basic DIY could work wonders for us women - I know I would certainly benefit from it.

One positive thing that has came out of my marriage ending is that I have learned more ab\out how to do things myself - maybe not difficult things, but I can |(|more quickly now|) change my wheel on car, climb a ladder to change the outside bulbs (thats a great achievement for me as I really do have a fear of heights) but the way i look at it is - if I dont do it - who will? or at least if i do it, thats it done and i dont have to wait for anyone else as i do quite like my own independence!!

Re: Workers who think they can rip off women...

My mum messed her car up in the first lot of snow. I asked a friend who knows loads of people who to use and he gave me a name.

There has been difficulty's with Christmas / new year closings and getting a second hand door for my mums car (loads for 2 door cars but hers is a 4 door) but it was finally got. Then they checked the side panel and had to replace that but had to get new.

I asked how much a new door would be as my mum was giving me grief. He refused to get a new one as it would cost my Mum to much said just be patient we will sort it by end of the week (they did)

I rang to check on final price and he was mentally working it out so l said go on hit me with it 1000 He almost screamed and choked and l said ok about 2000 He stuttered oh boy l am in the wrong business not a chance in heck...Probably around 500 or a tiny bit more. I think my jaw hit the floor with a loud crash.

Final cost was 550. On collection he said we took the bumber off yesterday and sorted that out she had messed it up underneath it needed sorting. (separate crunch that one) We didn't charge for that. And because the "new" door was canary yellow it is a nightmare to match red paint. It has had 4 coats but is still bright. He has said tell your mum we can keep paining it, one or two more coats should do it, no charge. As we put another one on last night l can not do next yet but can in a couple of days.

My mum said no just happy to have car back but many thanks.

No way can l fault the service or price and the guys were fantastic and friendly. There is honest garages out there they were BRILLIANT if you live in Manchester area and need a panel beater, mot and l think he does general repairs l am happy to pass this guy details on.

Re: Workers who think they can rip off women...

[quote user="StephB"]

valued at 80k for probate - it needed work doing I knew that but this is what happened.

Trees needing cutting down - ok got some quotes varying anywhere between 2,500 and 400 quid. In the finish paid @1000 as the person taking them down had a good rec and good insurance- and did a bloody good job.

drains needed clearing - one company quoted me 2,000 because they said serious repair work was needed, got a local company to rod them and then full inspection with a pipe camera - absolutely no damage to repair (and I have the dvd to prove it if anybody asks. Cost me 50 quid to have the drains rodded and cleared and an additional 80 quid for visual inspection which was only done at my insistence (the rod man said he thought the drain was sound - but who do you believe?)

builder quoted me 250 to replace guttering along one side (bearing in mind it is a 2 bed bungalow with plastic guttering) I replaced guttering on both sides of the building for 38 and it took me all of 40 mins

estate agent came round when i was thinking of selling - had already at this stage spent about 7k on the place - his evaluation? I would be lucky to get 50k for it - according to him needed gutting, new kitchen, new bathroom, rewiring, new water pipes, boiler etc. New roof trusses and roof retiling, new fireplace and flu liner. If I wanted to sell it to a builder he would be happy to sort the sale out for me. Bit miffed that after spending 7k an 80k home had dropped to 50k so got in A builder friend to do a full survey

boiler was only 2 1/2 years old and working perfectly, rewiring had been done 6 years before, no problem with pipework. fireplace was fine as was flu. roof trusses were fine, roofing felt and tiles all ok. No damp, no rot and no structural defects. Estate agent had said needed 40 k spending on it to bring it up to spec - builder reckoned would be 4k with lots of change! BTW with having none of the xtra work done it is has been valued at almost 3 times the 50k estimate by the other estate agent!

because you are a woman they think they can walk all over you!
