You do need to do the NHS phlebotomy course to be a phlebotomist - at most places it's only a day or half day, but they don't just let you loose on people after that, you have to do competencies as well, ie so many observations, so many patients full supervision, so many part etc etc. Been there, done that, stick the needles in :)

Not sure which area of the country you are in......

The NHS does prefer ppl to have healthcare experience with people. So if you've cared for relatives, friends etc... then always best to put it down on application. Also maybe worth trying to get some health care experience, such as voluntary work or paid work. Phlebotomy is quite a good place to start. Lots of patient contact and no previous experience required........

I'm not sure current CRB's work that way anymore. apparently you have to get a CRB application with the company you plan to work with. You can't have one and bring it to another position or company anymore.

sorry, what I meant was :

the NHS do need their own current CRB, but as I'm on file as having already got one elsewhere from 2006, then I was told that the search time for police etc would be quicker than the normal 4-6 weeks, because they only go back to the last recorded one as they have notes on any earlier misdemeanours or not as the case may be.
So a full search back to your primary school years takes 4-6 weeks, but if you already have a box marked clear up to such a date, then it's quicker as in my case they only have to go back 3 years and not 42ish to age 5 or however far back they go.
Well that's what the NHS told me, as having lost my job at the end of September and hubby been out of work 13 months, we need the money, and having to wait weeks and weeks to start work is ridiculous in these days of the recession...and they thought it would be quicker than the assumed time scale - I will keep everyone informed as they've had the form a week now - assuming the postal service didn't delay it during the snow problems.

Re: nhs radiography

[quote user="StephB"]

Well next month I depart full time vet employment to join the NHS working radiography department as a Trainee Assistant Practitioners. So working along side the radiographers, Go to uni one day a week and study for a Foundation Degree in Clinical Imagining. This then allows me to go onto the final year of the BSc. The reason I'm doing it this way is I can not afford to study at uni full time. My local uni offer the course, but I'd only get 5k a year to live on.

I only have my NVQ level III, althou just taken Diploma exams (so ). If your going down the route I'm going I would suggest you get some healthcare experience 1st, this went totally against me in my efforts at finding a job.

Even if it just weekend work taking blood samples at your local hospital, no qualifications required for it!

Best of luck finding a position

Re: nhs radiography

Ooo and 55 is NOT too old for radiography - there's loads of mature students, more so diagnostic in my year, but one of our current 2nd years is in her late 40s.
I'm guilty of being a therapeutic radiographer. I do miss practice but I love my new job - very emotionally draining at times but very rewarding - like VN work. I was lucky that I lived in a city where the course was run (Bristol) so I diudn't have to go away from home except during clinical placements. The degree is either a BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or Radiotherapy - so you have to decide when you apply which you fancy. It's advised that you spend a day in each department prior to application to see which you'd prefer. For me, I chose radiotherapy for the relationships you build with patients over a course of treatment, for some people we see them every day for seven weeks so you get to know them really well. The degree involves a good deal of physics but I found my VN knowledge really useful as a starting point. Mature students are assessed by each uni on an individual basis - they weren't that interested in my 'school' grades as I was 25 when I enrolled and they were more interested in what I'd done since then.

We shared about 75% of lectures with diagnostics in the first year, then about 50% 50% in second year, then we only saw the diagnostics for about 25% of lectures in third year. In diagnostic you can end up in CT/MRI/theatre/A&E/mobiles on wards/nuclear med plus more I'm sure that I can't remember. In therapy we end up as treatment radiographers, pre-treatment radiographers, planning radiographers, review radiographers, clinical trials/research radiographers to name a few so there's lots of scope for development with either career. At the moment (as most rads start out) I'm a rotational post so I spend about 3 months a year in pre-treatment and the rest on treatment floor but I'm heading down the route of a 50/50 split between treatment/pre-treatment if I get the post that's coming up soon.

The tuition fees on either degree are paid by the Government due to a shortage of rads, you also receive a means-tested bursary and a student loan if eligible. It's all assessed on an individual basis but as a fully independent student aged 25 with a hubby earning about 20k I received £200 a month bursary and £200 a month loan. I have to pay my loan back (6k) but my bursary is paid by the NHS. £400 a month before VN locum work meant that we coped just fine with a few cutbacks - lived on a HELL of a lot less as a SVN, hehe. I locumed every holiday to make money for the following term - kept good relationships with my practice (PDSA Bristol/VetsNOW) so managed to get plenty of locum work with them and through Carlton Professional.

Any other Q just fire away.

Re: nhs radiography

I am waiting to start in an NHS path lab - voluntary initially and will try for every vacancy that comes up while I am there. Have 25 years exp as a vet nurse and quite a bit of that in lab so hoping it works out. My CRB took 4 weeks ( interview was in november and I now have another to attend)

Re: nhs radiography

good luck if you also plan on changing "sides".
I've just accepted a job as theatre support worker (leading to senior operating theatre practictioner eventually).
For this post they didn't require any specific qualfications and I got in on the basis of my HND in Animal Management, and my 3 1/2 years in vet nursing (as unqualified) includign setting up and working in an operating theatre.
Use the NHS careers jobsite to look for jobs, and that will also give you the pre-requisites.
Easy to apply for any job that comes up, as it's all done by online CV and online applications and progress of the job applied for...
Current CRB check speeds up job start date though - as it's 4-6 weeks and that's where I'm at even though I was interviewed in November, and have a CRB from 2006.

Re: nhs radiography

Cheers all.xx

Re: nhs radiography

Nick is about to leave to train that's the other person, he will be around tomorrow or day after when he has recovered from today's diploma exams.

Re: nhs radiography

KateC on here trained as a radiographer, hopefully she'll be along and see this

Re: nhs radiography

I'm training to be a pharmacy technician at the moment - and it's great!
