OK I said I wasn't going to repsond to this thread as it was getting a bit silly but just to clarify a few points...

I do not want seperate forums I like it just the way it is, students and QVN's together (don't forget all QVN's where students once) My point about me wanting my qualifications recognised should be heeded, after all what is the point in qualifying in a subject if you arn't recognised for doing so? I think it should be something for students to work towards and be proud of when they receive the qualification.

I will never be so arrogant as to think I know it all just by holding a few qualifications, I am striving to learn something new all the time, which is why I come on here to speak to other people in the industry (qualified or not). I think a previous post of mine may have been misinterpreted which made a few people think I was a know it all (whatever that is?? I mean I still get on my hands and knees and scrub floors and unblock drians for gods sake, if that doesn't ground you after 16 years nothing will )

Anyway waffling over just thought I should clarify that.

i'm scared Going back to some of the original q's, I don't think we should have seperate areas, even those who are not QVNs sometimes have an important contribution to make. Also even though I am a QVN I am currently not working in practice, would I be allowed in? I also think its important to discuss the QVN/ experienced assistant issue, its one the whole profession should be having and clearly a passionate issue for many, including myself. Unfortunately the lack of recognition is the root cause of a lot of problems and the reason why many of us are leaving.. but maybe that should be another thread! *hides behind sofa*

OK I have now had a number of telephone calls and messages from a small group of people expressing their sadness / annoyance / anger that this thread has become so hostile.

I look at the thread and I just don't see the hostility. I just see some good points being raised.

On closer inspection, though, it seems that all of the complaints are between StephB and a small group of people who clearly don't like the tone of her posts.

So far, I have not found anything posted by StephB which I find particularly provocative / sarcastic. In this thread, she has even put things in the context of 'joke' or 'lol' on occasion, which is the accepted way of making it clear that you are joking.

In any event, I could not (and would not) censor someone for their turn of phrase, unless it was directly rude/offensive.

But that is all incidental. I do think that the people complaining about StephB need to take a long hard look at themselves and lay off.

You may not like her, you may not like her posts. The correct thing to do in that case is ignore her. It is NOT to heap vitriol on her. That makes you no better than each other.

StephB some people find your posts sarcastic. Bearing that in mind, you might like to try and make them less so in the future. I am not telling you to, or asking you to, that is your decision.

I think this thread only goes to prove how passionate we all are about the profession and this forum. The nature of our job makes us this way and if we can't be passionate about it here then where?
The nature of the job also means we often have to let off steam or ask advise and I personally have found this site to be very valuable when it comes to this.
I have been qualified a number of years but still learn a huge amount from this site and I think it would be a great loss if the forum dwindled because of pettiness.

I think moderators are a good idea, I'm sure Arlo can pick a few from different 'groups' to ensure fairness.
I do also believe that qualifieds should have their own area, or there should be an area set aside for those not in training (or if not in training, have been at some point) or in a pratice. For example there are a lot of threads asking about how to get a position in a training practice, some of these posters may never go on to work in practice but have access to the whole community on here.

I think there should be a couple of monitors, but they should be people that don't post regular, but do come on regular for a read (or would make time). I also think anonymity is a good idea.

There a couple of groups of friends on here, and while this is not a bad thing in itself (as you seem to provide a good personal support network to each other), this does lead to a lot of problems on this site. As a good friend you do stick up for your friend, so if the more popular/ well known/ regulars are monitors I think there will be/ felt like there is favouritism/ bias.

Also as friends you know each others ways, and get what they are saying, so may not see something as offensive whereas an outsider will read it differently.

Put yourself in the other shoes. Person 1 posts a comment, person 2 disagrees, friends of 1 – 3,4, and 5 all post comments 'sticking up for' / agreeing with person 1, person 1 then posts a reply. Person 1 has only 1 person disagreeing with her, but person 2 has 4 people against her, how would you feel as person 2? Then add a few wrongly worded / misunderstood comments in the mix.

I think a non regular poster would be able to say 'oy watch your langauge' or' reword that last comment please'

WOW, this was on page 5 when i last looked this morning, now page 12 and everyone still cant decide what they want...

Im sure arlo is just putting forward ideas, because he is busy etc etc, and it seems like we fighting over what should and shouldnt be. There are some valid points (from what i read anyways from the last few pages) and i wont explain or talk about them myself, but some WERE valid.

I personally think the idea of a moderator / mentor / monitor, WHATEVER you wanna call it is a good idea, take some tension off on Arlo, and gives him a helping hand when needed like when he isnt online or something, someone to maybe help diffuse a touchy situation, without getting dragged into it themselves.

Maybe it should be arlo that does decide on who becomes his 'helpers', instead of us all voting?? That way, there cant be any hassle or fights and moaning about it being all cliquey with each other!!??

Bouncyfi, you may not like someone else on this site, or the way they express themselves. But the right thing to do in that case is to ignore them, not to let rip in such a personal way.

Apart from anything else, it is unfair of you to say that someone else's comments are meant sarcastically, even though they put them in the context of 'lol' or 'joke'. How would you know? People have different senses of humour!

I think some people need to calm the hell down on here and stop taking things so literally and personally and remember they are not the only people on this forum others are going to have a difference in opinion. we all have crap days and crap things going on in our lives and take things a little personally. the amount of times i've been jumped on and put down and belittled on this forum for having a difference in opinion wrong. Maybe you are seeking out my posts i donno but don't post half as much as i used to... the majority of my posts these days are to offer an opinion which then get's misconstrued or commented on dripping with attitude from people on here that clearly don't like me and never will. am i going to allow someone to speak to me like that? no i'm not a child nor am i an idiot. if you can't deal with that, that's not my problem, ignore me. I have every right to have an opinion on here as everyone else. I have major issues with Caro and have tried to resolve them on a few occasions privately and was basically spat at. I even asked her for help and advice a while back and she then turned my reply regarding an old school friend all about her and proceeded to make it all personal when it had NOTHING to do with her. I'm over it... if people wanna hold grudges fine... i be right there with them. But I'm usually pretty quick to apologize and try to move on and make amends in most cases when i'm wrong.
