Its great that you do that. At the practices I have worked I have always come across VNs and even SVNs that think cleaning is below them. At one practice I was just about to go and clean up some poo form the yard when the head nurse stopped me and said 'don't, we've got lower nurses to do that' I told the 'lower' nurses what she had said anyway, and told them that all nurses should take pride in maintaining a clean and safe environment, like I did. grr.
Now most of us are RVNs, and there-fore responsible for ourselves, but ANA's are stil under the direction of a vet, if they are administering meds, including wormers and flea treatment, so any problems are related back to the vet, it shouldnt be about what thatr HN lets you do!

As a RVN, who often works in a short-staffed practice, the more ANA's can do (provided that they know the consequences of what can happen)the better, but saying that, i stil think it is the Vn's or Vets job to place IV's, take bloods etc unless your ANA has been trained, and is always supevised by a qualifed member of staff. I agree with what has been said, i take pride in spending time with my patients, getting them to eat, grooming them, and making them feel as at home as possible, but at the same time, ANA's often have more to learn, so they can feed/groom etc while i make my hospital clean and germ free!!!!

This thread is starting to annoy me. Cleaning does ot stop when you are a QVN nd cleaning is for the good of our patients to prevent infections etc, not just for the HN to give people something to do. There is more to nursing than placing cannulas etc - what about spending time with patients encouraging them to eat, grooming, walking etc, spending time talking to worried clients etc. There is no point in doing your job if all your patients get infections from your hospital. I take a pride in ensuring our clinic in spotless and infection free and that is a vital part of my job, as much as placing cannulas etc.

- well said, I might be qualified but there is nothing that says I dont have to get down on my hands and knees and scrub a floor and make sure the place was generally clean and presentable- and I was still doing that on a daily basis right up till the end of my last job. I also took a bit of an exception to an earlier comment about QVNs treating training and laystaff badly - I never have, and have never allowed it any place I have worked. If treating trainees or laystaff badly is preventing trainees or laystaff doing stuff that they should not be doing /or shouldnt be doing unsupervised (through lack of experience) then yes I guess I am guilty of that one - but I will do my damndest to make sure that they do get the experience in a safe environment (and that means safe to the patient as well). I will never prevent anybody from learning but I do feel that there are a lot of people in this job that want the responsibilities without learning the stuff that goes behind it - I am not and will never be in favour of shortcuts.

Re: What can animal auxiliary nurses do?

Spot on Nicky VN!
