It's like an ID badage, bit thicker, but it has a transmitter and microphone in it. Basically when triggered it allows a security company to listen into conversations and if the security company feel you to be in a treatening situation they can then either contact another member of staff ie your boss or the police.

We are acually about 12 miles east of Manchester and so far I haven't heard of anything round our side but then again, I hadn't heard about any of the bopve either! I am going to take the info from this thread into work today and show the Practice Manager as it doesn't hurt to be extra safe. The stupid thing is that 90% of our clients pay by credit or debit card so unless they wanted lots of slips of paper, don't think they'd do too well out of us but I guess it's just the usual misconception that all vets are loaded and young girlies are likely to be on the front desk alone.

Re: Warning for Manchester Nurses

Hi Dippy

Just to let you know, you can get personal alarms that when triggered go through to a security system. We used to use these in one practice I worked at. If the personal alarm was pressed nothing could be heard in the building but the security company would then phone. If they spoke to someone and was told it was an accident whilst taking a load of washing upstairs at 11pm on a night shift (which happened once or twice), then the call would be logged and finished. If they got no anwer at the practice they would alert the poice straight away. This happened once to us when we thought we were being broken into and the police arrived within a few minutes.

Re: Warning for Manchester Nurses

Funnily enough (well not funny at all really!), I raised this at a last major practice meeting as I had heard of it happening in other parts of the country. One or two people seemed to think I was bonkers but thankfully those in charge didn't and we have now installed a panic alarm, not that there's really much we could do if someone had a knife but at least whoever is on reception can alert other staff members. I still worry though that if that happens, it just means someone else will run to reception and be put at risk too but I don't really know what the answer is. My favourite idea was to have a panic button which triggers the main burglar alarm in the street - it wouldn't stop it happening and it wouldn't stop the staff member being scared to go to work afterwards but at least it might mean people outside would notice comeone running away, get a acra registration etc so they could be cught. We do also have numerous cctv cameras in our pracice and signs displayed warning of the fact. I can't imagine this happening and am fairly sure that I would be a nervous wreck for a long time afterwards!

Re: Warning for Manchester Nurses

He should do, if you bring up your present worries, he does nothing and you get hit.

Re: Warning for Manchester Nurses

bloody hell I'm just realising the extent of what is happening here! Nope we only found out a few days ago!! We where informed that it was a few practices in South Manchester that where hit but now I'm reading as far south as Lymm and Alti have been robbed too.
