I am interested in ppls reactions to seeing the process, the meat eaters once the animals had been skinned were ok, which I found a bit distrubing to be honest!!!

If i took that attitude i would be workingin a shop! But what got me the most was the nigerian girl saying she was goin to go nigeria to kill a chicken cos she wanted too!!

I don't know how they can see it as "fine" once the skins removed! Disturbing scary attitude!! Stuffed heart, never got the taste for haggis but I have tried it a few times (found one of them I liked but the next one was horrible so havnt tried it since). Neck of lamb done really slow in a stew is lovely, so is oxtail and shin of beef. Most people going for supermarket meat go for the really moist bright red stuff - when it is the darker dryer meat that has the best taste. You dont see much mutton around now and I actually prefer this to lamb. If you are buying meat you often pay more at the supermarket than you would at a small family butcher , and have less choice

Re: Kill it, Cook it, Eat it.

I also think as a nation we have lost alot of the skills people had in days gone by- i.e how to cook the poorer ends/cuts of meat.
Is anyone else watching this series?

What are your views? Do you think meat eaters should be willing to kill an animal if they are going to eat it?

There are a couple of extreme views on the show - mainly the country girl, and the fit but completely twaty James (sorry if anyone knows these people!)...

[/quote]

Watching it, yeah. I quite like the series but not the people in it. I have a special dislike of James the vegan. I think he's too attached to animals and far too set in his ways. The other vegan, the lassy, I like her idea. She's using the show as a way to think whether returning to being an omnivore (Not a meat-eater as I'm sure she'd eat veg too) is a good plan now that she knows how slaughter and rearing can be done and she at least tries to take part. The country-girl is annoying too, she's set in her ways and can't understand James' ideals. Mind you, the vegans ideas in the early part of the series were strange!
Take this: The female wouldn't castrate an animal as it would "deprive it of its natural form"...or something to that effect, I'm sorry but what? and James' would rather see an animal in excruciating pain than have it put down because putting it down isn't natural. Again, what?!
I can see where the natural form is coming from but the no to PTS...that just doesn't make sense to me at all!

However on your other questions: I don't believe those that have meat in their diet should be willing to kill to eat. But I believe it's best if people know where their food comes from, which is one of the aims of this show but it's on too late and on BBC3 which doesn't help matters.

I like how the peoples ideas change when they get shown how their meat is made for the mass-market and how different it is for the butcher. Also that they're far more likely to buy quality over cheap-price once they see how it's done properly.

Sadly, not enough people care to make the change to eating properly produced and reared meat in the UK. This is, I believe, why more of it comes from abroad and is far cheaper to buy and is of a lesser quality.

Re: Kill it, Cook it, Eat it.

I agree Mrs Mac - I can remember buying lambs for running on at a lot less than a fiver a piece - which is all they were worth to the farmer had he sold them to the supermarket

Re: Kill it, Cook it, Eat it.

I was veggy for almost 21 years - I am now a meat eater. I strongly believe that people should be aware how their meat is reared and slaughtered. I know halal and kosher meat there are religious factors to be taken into consideration but I have a number of Jewish friends (non practising) and we have discussed this at length in the past - the 'rule' that an animal shouldnt be stunned prior bleeding isnt actually a rule, there is nothing in the Torah to suggest that it isnt kosher if the animal is stunned prior to the cut - its very much down to how a community interprets the writings. Animals have to be healthy and free from disease and live prior to bleeding (but does live have to mean conscious?). In ? Sweden the majority of animals presented for kosher slaughter are stunned first, so why not here? This is also the case in many of the Dutch abbatoirs.

an issue that concerns me (even before I reverted back to meat) is that meat eaters that do not agree with Kosher or Halal slaughter may end up eating it anyway. Kosher meat is expensive to produce because it has to be free of all blood and blood vessels (porging) - it is not economically viable to treat a whole carcass this way so Kosher meat is usually made up of joints or cuts that are easy to porge - the remainder of the carcass still has a value and even tho it has been killed as Kosher will probably end up being sold to anybody that wants to buy it. A considerable number of carcasses may be rejected after slaughter which may also be purchased by butchers and sold as non Kosher - so even if you disagree with Kosher or Halal the chances are if you are eating meat you have eaten some in your lifetime without even knowing.

I have reared lambs, chickens, ducks for meat . I do shoot and fish and have no problem eating meat so long as I know that animal has lead a good life and has had a humane death. If I need to take a life then it is done quickly , cleanly and with as little stress to the animal as possible.

Re: Kill it, Cook it, Eat it.

I - in all honesty - never really gave a crap where my food came from when I lived at home with my parents... it wasn't until I moved down here and started buying food myself that I sat up and took note...

On a vet nurse wage I will admit I don't always go for the best kept - due to the higher price. But having the benefit now of living down south I have an amazing butcher, and even better - farmers! I've bought half pigs - all different types of cuts, and I'm waiting to get some lamb from a receptionist later this year. I have seen these animals on farms, and was hoping to get involved in lambing season... granted I don't actually go the whole road and be there at the killing - but I know where they are coming from!

Re: Kill it, Cook it, Eat it.

As a nation we are divorced from food production. We also live in a 'I want it now and I want it cheap' society. Alot of people see cheap chicken/beef etc etc on supermarket shelf but they dont have a clue how it got there, let alone the 'cost' of it.

I get sick of people blaming farmers for this, that and the next thing. Its like every other profession- there are good and bad in all walks of life. Its all down to consumer demand. The masses want cheap meat so they get it. Why dont people point the finger at supermarkets instead of at farmers?

It's the attitude of the meat eaters which stuns me. I agree with the guy james, how can one minute you say oh look the animals going to die and then a few minutes later when its skinned its "Tasty food" or "meat"?? Am i being simple but to me thats still an animal just dead/murdered.

The chickens slaughter was done pretty nice i must say i would challenge anyone meateaters included to look into that in more detail, the slaughter of chickens is much less humane! The pig not getting to her piglets? It is just disgusting, it was a video of this that made me finally go veggy.I can't see how anybody can justiy this and still be hapyy to eat pork? I would say this show is showing the nice side of things.

My bf has been watching it with me and its sort of helped i think to see my point of view and make him realise where his meat comes from.

But do people really think about it? Do people want to know? Do they care? No. It's that ignorance which allows large scale factory farming to continue and the un needed suffering of many animals . Also if you look at it not only from a welfare point of view, if you look at it from climate point of view it makes sense on why eating meat is also ruining our planet!

Been Veggy for 3 years and can't say i miss meat. Am gradually going vegan just can't give up cheese!

Rant over! Just my opinion btw dnt mean to offend anyone.
