My
springy comes with me sometimes, but she hangs out around the
reception desk unless she is invited elsewhere. If she does start to
be silly and try to come into theatre or the ward I ask her if she
wants to get into a kennel – that sends her running back upstairs
to reception!!

But
my previous springy was happier in a kennel. It was fine if I was
about, but If I wasn't she'd cry, but in a kennel she knew I'd be back
to get her.

My
Labby puppy is ok if he can see me or if he is in a different room
and can not see nor hear me, but if he can hear me but not see
me....moan moan moan!!!

But
at the same time I think people do need to be aware of how much
bother their pets maybe. I'll always say 'oh no leave and I'll deal
with' (But then I have stupid neurotic pets!!), but in a busy ward
the last thing you need is to feed/ clean/ listen to other staffs
pets.

I
do think when possible you should be able to bring your pets in (and
this should be all staff or no staff, not just management) but
consideration should be shown to other staff.

I
have to point out I think my opinion comes from working in a hospital
and being expected to look after somebody's hand rear, while looking
after 2 full wards one of which had other hand rears, plus a few
sickies, plus staff skipping of home leaving dirty kennels!!

I have worked in two places, not even animal businesses, where colleagues used to take their dogs in and it just seemed to make for a nicer atmosphere in the office somehow.

Ref. the horses and death, where I used to live there was a slaughterhouse on a private lane about a mile and a half off the main road, and we always, without fail had problems getting the horses past that part of the road where the turning was, they can smell it for a very long way I think.

Re: Pet @ Work

I'm very lucky and get to take my 3 Jack Russels with me to work every day, they stay in a disused kennel area with 3 other dogs, it's brilliant set up as we go walking in luch break!

Re: Pet @ Work

My 2 dogs come to work every day and roam in the garden all day with the vets 2 dogs and another nurses dog. They all get on fantastically, and their days revolve around sleeping and playing with each other! They even allow occasional stray dogs into their pack while we find homes for them! Before my old dog died she used to have people coming to play with her most days, and forced them to throw a ball for her... anyone that walked past!! Most clients like the idea that all our pets are with us all day, and love to see them there, hanging over the fence!!! The same day but before he was found my friend and her mum were riding their horses down the lane, planning on going through the woods then back home, and the horses stopped at the end of the road and point blank refused to go into the woods, to the point they were rearing and spinning round.

[/quote]

I think they can sense/smell death pretty clearly. Where i used to keep my horse they used to shoot pheasant, my horse was fine with the gunshot etc and fine with the trailer when it was empty, but as soon as it had dead birds on it she would refuse to go past snorting like crazy.

I also used to have a cat who could tell when my dad was having hypos, many a time she woke him up during the night scratching at him, any longer and he would have been in a coma. Funny because she was a right grumpy cow who didnt really like people so its not as if she was closely bonded to him or anything

He has his own kennel, with his own bed and bowls etc. He is really good most the time but will get a bit upset if he see's another dog being aggressive towards us and will whine. He also starts to whine sometimes if a sick animal in and he seems to sense it. One day he was very unsettled then poodle in another kennel had a fit, and another time was whiny when a dog had developed breathing probs - so he is abit like a nurse doing obs on all the patients!! LOL!!

When not operating or consulting he can potter around and often stays behind the desk and greets people. The vets dos often come through as well so we have 3 dogs pottering round! He spends most of his time asleep in the filling trays or on the desk amusing clients. He is well behaved and does as he is told my all the staff. he used to appear in the hatch between reception and consult which the clients thouhgt was funny but he would always get down when told. If he annoyes us we give him his mouse to play with. Im diabetic and Toby has always picked up on my hypos before I know about them. the only place he doesnt go is college. When I stay at my mums my youngest cat Doodle comes with Toby to keep him company while im at college other wise he crys all day and all the usual ignor him, feed him, exercise him, clean his tray out wont stop him till i get back to mums but Doodle stops him and they are happy together. If Doodle has to come to work she goes in the walk in kennel and I always clean it out and re-paper and vetbed it befor leaving.

I take my dog in with me when I can, especially if Nath is on a long day too (my hubby usually works either early mornings or late afternoons, so is not always a need to take him with me) He doesn't get on with other dogs when confined or on a lead, so always goes in a kennel. I would never expect anyone else to clear up after him, I often used to take his own bed with me too, so not taking up any practice bedding/washing.

In monmouth, the one vet's dog has become almost like a member of staff, as he's gone to work everyday since he was a tiny baby, sits behind reception...quite sweet actually, but got under your feet sometimes!

Re: Pet @ Work

there was a couple of times where nurses (before my time there) just left the kennels dirty for days until the vets wanted to use them and couldnt after realising it was there mess they hadnt cleaned it up. so since then its been a bit of a rule!
